ClearNav Vario and XCSoar by
Dan Marotta
I'm trading in my CAI-302 for a ClearNav XC vario. Looking at the setup
screen in XCSoar, there's no listed driver for the CNv vario. The XCSoar
Manual also says nothing about the CNv vario though it states that it
will work with any vario which outputs NMEA data. Both my Android phone
and my...

Discus Aileron Seals by
Peter F[_2_]
In Richard Johnson's flight test of the original Discus he replaces the
mylar seals with internal fabric seals & gets a noticeable improvement in
performance.
The mylar on my Discus CS is 20years old & starting to lift in places, so I
will need to replace it.
Has anyone out there done the...

Cable vs rope pulling glider from field by
Auxvache
I'd like to make a stout wire cable or rope with proper TOST ring, to
have on hand should I have to tow my 15m glider from mud/soft dirt/
guano.
Is a metal cable necessary/preferable, or would high breaking-strength
rope be sufficient?
My only experience here (Chester loam, Pegase, and stick-shift...

Solo Rigging Equipment by
[email protected]
I'm interested in being able to rig my glider by myself and have been
looking at the various kinds of equipment out there for this purpose.
Does anyone have any experience with Chip Bearden's WingMate? It
looks like an interesting design. Does anyone have one they are not
using and would like to...

Onerous OPerating Procedures/Improper (illegal?) Use of Unicom Freq. by
rjciii
The ongoing saga of my glider club's fight with the local airport
board at LaGrange, GA (LGC)continues.
A formal complaint was made by us to the local FAA who pulled both
parties in to a joint meeting in May where the airport board was
explicitly told that "They (the gliders) *will* be allowed to...

Red Arrows banned from olympics - British PC strikes again by
stevehaley
The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the
2012 London Olympics because they are deemed "too British". Organisers
of the event say that the Arrows military background might be
"offensive" to other countries taking part in the Games. The display
team have performed at more...

Weird Experimental Certificate wording - Normal? by
Noel Luneau
I have an ASW-17 and the aircraft is registered under
an experimental certificate and has special operating
limitations.
They read, in part, 'All flights shall be conducted
within the geographic area described as follows: Within
300 mile radius of a sanctioned glider meet or contest.
Profficiency...

ASW20L extentions with winglets? by
goneill
In relation to the ASW20L extensions , do you know
of anyone having the extensions with winglets on or perhaps shortening
them to where the extended control surface ends and
putting winglets on to compensate
I would think that would boost the LD to 44-45 plus give the handling
improvements with...

Kestrel 17 Polar by
Jim Archer
I am curious as to why the Kestrel polar is not included in any of the
flight recorders/flight computers. I have one loaded into my SN-10 from
the polar data in the manual so it's not a burning issue, but I'm
feeling a bit left out!

I know there are electric powered sailplanes but by
YouHelpBuild.com
How about 100% electric powered ultralights?
What problems can anyone forsee to building a 100% electric ultralight
aircraft for short & mid-range commuters to get back & forth to work
(aside from air traffic issues... it IS a big sky after all)? I
understand the average commute is less than 30...

emailing your log file from an iPhone by
Dave Nadler
These days we're asked to email our log files to
the (often remote) scorer, and PC's are, well, so passe.
It's a drag running around trying to find somebody with a
PC to email the file. And we definitely to NOT want
to delay the scoring.
Some flight computers can send the log file directly from...

1-35 or 201B by
Waduino
So you have a choice for a first glider. You're flying in northeastern US,
i.e. generally light conditions (when it's not snowing).
These 2 planes have roughly similar performance on paper and prices,
although they probably handle quite differently and I would guess the 1-35
penetrates better....

Vans RV-G glider by
Mark James Boyd
Hmmm....
I was wondering if metal gliders have an L/D disadvantage
due to the metal, or because of the lousy rivets and
poor wing airfoil and draggy struts (of the SGS gliders,
for example).
Is it possible to make a retract gear metal glider with
flush rivets and a carry-through spar which would...

Please refer to the following link to see a video of the Silent moter-glider

doing a low pass with jet engines screaming, AND self-launching.

What am I looking for? by
Waduino
What's the solution to this question?
What's a good first glider for someone transitioning from a CS77 and
wanting the following:
- automatic hookups
- easy to rig
- flaps
- well behaved in terms of stall/spin, and
- climbs well in weak conditions and runs reasonably well in average
east coast...
