Transponders and FLARM by
JS
Dan's post unfortunately didn't start a new thread as intended.
Since we intentionally fly close to them, most alerts are from other gliders.
I find audible alerts of mode C or S equipped gliders sharing a thermal to be "noise". For me, an audible alert marks the only time to look at the traffic...

Splittng a GPS antenna to multiple devices by
JS
Didn't want to further derail the thread about Trig TN72.
This thread has been up before?
It is possible and functional to use one GPS antenna for multiple GPS receivers.
If you use GPS antennas that will only accept power of 3V you must put DC blockers on all but one receiver. The one receiver...

SkySight forecast available for SW USA by
JS
As used at the recent WGC in Benalla... An excellent forecasting tool has been released in the USA, first available for the SW. More to come?
https://skysight.io
I have flown using Matthew Scutter's SkySight website when in Australia and found it extremely useful.

FAA Airman Certificate replacement by
JS
Just replaced mine, as much of the text had worn off the plastic card.
The certificate replacement application requires a photo ID, but there is no photo on the new certificate. The accompanying paperwork states:
"All certificate holders are required to carry positive photo identification while...

Questions about ram air emergency parachutes by
JS
(Moved from the parachute comfort thread)
Uli asked:
Not wanting to derail this thread any further (if that is even possible) but realistically, how difficult is it to use a ram-air chute vs. a round canopy? I have only three static line jumps under a military style Pioneer L-10 and the landings...

Glider and vehicle request for 18m Nationals - Uvalde by
JS
As last year at Nephi, Bruce Taylor will be flying my ASG29 at Uvalde.
But our friend and Uvalde 1991 15M World Champ Brad Edwards is looking for a glider.
Brad is willing to reciprocate with a glider in Australia, most likely a JS1C.
The most convenient place to fly it would be at our club, Lake...

Wacky Tracky by
JS
June 2nd at about 130PM Pacific it appears that trackers stopped working.
InReach and SPOT both dropped out.
Tracking sites show yesterday's complete tracks today.
My APRS did not function properly yesterday, which may or may not be related.
Did not see evidence in flight of GPS jamming.
Received...

Done this for a few years now, but...
Has anyone else noticed this inconsistency in the OLC website?
Not ten, twelve! And not a request.
Or zero?

Please enter the value you want to donate (a min. of 10 EUR is respectfully requested). Get your smiley for more than 1 year (up to 5) with an...

Contest jokes by
JS
There must be dozens...
Opening gambit:
Q. What's the difference between stealing a toy from a baby and stealing a toy from contest pilots?
A. Sooner or later, the baby will stop crying.

Use of drag chutes by
JS
The accidents in Namibia which totaled gliders and claimed a life deserve more respect than that offered by our friend "Fred Drift".
Hey, it's fun to land with a drag chute. I regret never trying ASW17B 15 meter drag chute landings. At 20m it was huge fun.

The ridge was working! by

Daniel Sazhin declared and flew 1000k O/R today.
Others had fun too.
Very nice.
Nobody there had trackers linked to glideport.aero, so it's an evening surprise.

IACRA Deadline - FAA unable to keep it up by
JS
Washington DC.
Responding to the incapabilities of the 3.2 million dollar IACRA program, FAA announced the vicarious program VIACRA to keep up the processing of student pilot applications until IACRA could seek professional help.
Instructors should avoid using VIACRA more then twice per day.
