Winpilot and Colibri Problems by
ttaylor at cc.usu.edu
I am running a system that includes WinPilot running on an Ipaq 37XX
series, Colibri GPS/logger and Borgelt B50. The system is very
unstable and will usually only run for an hour at the most and often
only a few minutes before it crashes or gives an error message.
I get a "lost GPS signal" quite...

Finding Historical Weather Data by
TTaylor at cc.usu.edu
I would like to look back at weather data from about two years ago for
a specific day. Does anyone know of a weather database that I could
get this information from for the Western US?
Thanks,
Tim

Thanks to the glider pilot clones in Austria by
TTaylor at cc.usu.edu
I received this e-mail from my 16-year-old daughter who has been in
Austria about 25 km south of St. Pölten for nine months on a high
school exchange. Before she left soaring was just one of those things
her strange dad did. Now it is cool. The short wing comment is
because my previous plane was...

Anti-glare covers for Ipaq - Do they work? by
TTaylor at cc.usu.edu
I recently upgraded from an Ipaq 3760 to an Ipaq 3950 series PDA. I
noticed the screen is brighter, but also I am getting more glare in the
cockpit. Have others tried the anti-glare screen protectors and do
they help?
Thanks ,
Tim

Wiring Ipaq 3950 by
TTaylor at cc.usu.edu
I am updating from my old Ipaq 3760 to a 3950. I am not sure which
pin to put the +5V in on. The old 3760 used pin 9 (DCD RS232/USB
+5V). The diagram for the 3950 has DCD RS232 as pin 6 and USB-UDC + as
pin 19.
Can someone tell me the correct pin to use?
Thanks,
Tim

Etiquette for posting items For Sale in R.A.S. by
TTaylor at cc.usu.edu
Just a reminder:
1. This is an international group, please include location. Not all
news reader software show the posters e-mails so even those with
country id's in their e-mail should include it anyway.
2. If possible put a price so we can avoid the inevitable "what is
the price" secondary...

Backing up WinPilot by
TTaylor at cc.usu.edu
Is there a way to maintains two IPAQs to be identical with WinPilot? I
would like to set up a primary unit, with the second unit as a backup
in case the first one fails. I have found that just copying files does
not work. The settings files are not duplicated in this way. I have
two IPAQ...

Solstice Greetings by
TTaylor at cc.usu.edu
Ah, once again the winter solstice has arrived in the Northern
Hemisphere. For we pagan sun worshipers (a.k.a. glider pilots) there
is hope once again that the days will grow longer and the thermals
stronger. Our thoughts go out to our friends on the Southern side of
the earth as the days start...

Google Earth by
ttaylor at cc.usu.edu
If you though Google maps were fun, try Google Earth. It often has
higher resolution than the maps and you can tilt your view into 3D.
Once in 3D, pull with your mouse and then let go and you can fly
over/through the terrain.
Hands down, the best view of the world yet. Can't wait till we...

Spectra cord for ground launch by

I have been doing research on cord/rope in the USA. Is there any
consensus on what to use for auto tow or winch launching?
I am finding prices of about $0.23/foot to $0.40/foot for 3/16"
double braid with breaking strength of 1950 pounds depending on the
type of outer braiding. =BC" with 3150...

OLC score calculation? by
ttaylor at cc.usu.edu
I was just wondering how the OLC scores are calculated. I was looking
at a case today where a higher performance ship Ventus 2 versus my
Ventus B flew a shorter distance and slower yet gets a slightly higher
score.
Here is the raw data from August 20th on the USA section:

How much water for a 1000K attempt? by
ttaylor at cc.usu.edu
I am working on the planning for a 1000K attempt. One question I have
is how much water should I launch with in my Ventus B? I can carry up
to 40 gallons (150 liters), but for a 1000K flight I will need to
launch in early weak conditions, followed by strong conditions latter
in the day.

Tows in Southern Utah in March? by
ttaylor at cc.usu.edu
Is there anyplace to get a tow in Southern Utah in Mid March? I want to
get out of the cold and head south for a few days. I remember good
thermals in the area last year when I flew my Mooney down at that time
of year.

I have been exploring the potential of the mountains along the Wasatch

note several years ago about some of my early experiences (Ridge
running the Wasatch, R.A.S. Oct 9, 2001). Since that time I have flown
