line vs progressive lenses for sunglasses by
Kevin Anderson
Help. I am at that age. I wear contacts for distance vision but now my
arms are getting too short also. Causing headaches and queasiness when
trying to read my instruments, especially the PDA.
I would like to hear back from others on what decision they made on
progressive vs. lined lenses...

Refinishing questions by
[email protected]
Hello ;)
I'm about to start refinishing a Discus.Searching through this and
other forums I've noticed people are leaning towards polyurethane and
away from gelcoat.Gelcoat seems to be much easier in my situation,
since I don't have a spray booth and they don't recommend sanding poly
after you've...

Tim[_2_]
Come on now, what where some of the highlights from this year's
convention for those of us stuck at home for various reasons. With no
convention next year, there should have been a lot of "new" stuff.
Usually RAS is full of post-convention
Some information I would love to hear about would...

Waynes Rule by

Below is a pre-amble to a new yahoo group I have started to discuss thermals. I would ask all interested gliding pilots to join in and learn, or teach.

Ok, we know the shapes, triggers, the sizes, the volumes, the heights, the strengths, the distances...

Transponder antenna - blade vs stub monopole by
5Z
Any aerodynamic thoughts on the two available choices?
My ASH-26E came with the stub mounted just behind the wheel. Every
now and then it catches on the trailer, so I just straighten it, no
big deal.
An ASW-24B in our club is about to get a transponder and the factory
recommends the installation...

need for dial altimeter? by

I am in the process of designing the instrument panel/layout for my
HP-24. Still a ways to go before I will need it, but it is raining out
and my CAD program is running and so is my
imagination..........so.............I was reading about the new Tasman
Data Module on Paul R's website and see that...

A thought about handicapping....... by
XYZ
What happens if we handicap pilots instead of aircraft.....
Have a handicap card for each pilot airplane combination.
If I can consistantly get 50% of the possible points earned by the days
winner,
I would get a series of normalization factors (2.00) that over time would
reflect my...

Question on FAA knowledge test endorsements. by
Jim Logajan
Simple question (for everyone but me!):
Is the CFI endorsement to take a private pilot test for a specific category
(e.g. airplane, rotorcraft, glider) or a category and class (e.g. airplane,
single engine land) or some other classsification (e.g. fixed-wing), or not
category or class...

Schleicher pneumatic tube plumbing question by
Tuno
I've dispatched this question to the dealer and factory, but need to
troule-shoot quick so trolling here. I have a 2008 Schleicher ASG29
with confused instruments following some repair work.
My question is, in its factory configuration, are the three lines from
the multi-probe free of joints,...

Parowan, Thinking Outside the Box - An Opportunity Knocks! by

Parowan, thinking outside the box - An opportunity knocks!
Is it just me?
With the obvious decline of soaring participants in our sport
shouldn't we really consider this a "good problem" to have, let me see
if I have this right:
"Way more Pilots want to race, not just fly but race with their...

Landings question by
Cats
I am one of those people with ongoing intermittent landing problems. I
have good patches - managed to get solo recently - and then bad
patches. The bad patches probably co-incide with forgetting to look up
as I start the round-out, so there is no hold-off and a rather heavy
landing, sometimes...

bird flew right through the doorway, swooped right over my
head........and crashed into the...

Do your straps up tightly for winch launches! by
Derek Copeland
The UK Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) has
recently published a report on a fatal accident involving
a DG600 sailplane back in 2005.
The circumstances were that the DG600 took a winch
launch, and rotated into an unusually steep climb after
lift off. This was enough to slow down a slightly...

An eye opener:

Transfer of IGC log for contest scoring by

I plan to fly in my first contest this summer. What is the best
(easiest) way to transfer my IGC flight log to the scorer? I use a
Cambridge 302 and IPAQ 3955. For the OLC, I download the file to my
IPAQ using ConnectMe and the take the IPAQ home and connect it to my

Fear of flying cross country by

I would like to fly more cross country flights but have to admit I
usually come up with a list of excuses for not going on any particular

or my battery seems low, or something. Some of this is a general
concern about personal...

175 or 250 watt transponder? by
Itsaplane
Needing a replacment, my transponder shop told me that above 15k' the
FAR's require a 250 watt transponder (125w below 15k').
True?
I'm pretty sure that sailplane owners are mostly installing 175 watt
units and flying them to 18k' (and higher in wave windows). Right?
If this 15k' rule is real,...
