Tire Stiffness & trailer swaying - resolution by
chris
Here is the feedback on my trailer towing problem.
I thought I'd make a detailed write up to share what I learned with
others.
I was waiting until I gave a real towing trip as proof that this fix
worked. I recently drove from Atlanta up to the Sequatchie Valley in
TN. This included highway...

Glider Handling on Tow by
John Carlyle
A question for any aerodynamicists out the why does low aero tow speed adversely affect the handling of a glider so drastically?
Occasionally I’ve received an aero tow in my LS-8 (dry) at 55 kt (minimum recommended aero tow speed is 54 kt). The plane is heavy and unresponsive at that speed;...

Panel volt meter by
Bob C
I just found a really nice panel volt meter. It is
7/8' X 1-3/4' X 1/8'. Weighs nothing. It needs a
single 7/32' hole for mounting. The wires run through
the single hollow mounting stud to the rear of the
panel. Really slick! 2 wires (+V & ground). Reads
4V to 25V. It's from Lascar...

The aerodynamics of a towplane in a kiting glider situation by
Tom BravoMike
I know there is a thread going on about and around the latest tragic accident from 5-9-2020 and I preferred to start a new thread as I felt uncomfortable going into a dry technical discussion in the context. So the issue is:
I would like to know more about the aerodynamics of the towplane in all...

Soaring through White Sands restricted airspaces by
tuno
I don’t have the latest Albuquerque sectional in front of me,
but according to my SeeYou maps, the R-5107D restricted airspace over
White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico goes from the ground to
22,000ft, and R-5107B (adjacent to the west) goes from the ground to
the moon, both continuous...

O2 and Cypriot airliner crash by
[email protected]
In accounts of the crash of the Cypriot airliner in Greece, all I've
read say that loss of cabin pressure could not, by itself, incapacitate
the pilot. Yet, I was once told by an ATP that at 40k feet (admittedly
this plane was at 35k) O2 supply by itself will not suffice to keep you
conscious and...

Currency requirements for commercial glider pilot by
Doug LS4
Recent discussions at my small club have centered around the cuurency
requirements for commercial glider pilots. My understanding is that a
pilot may not carry passengers unless they have had three take offs and
landings within the previous ninety days in an aircraft of the same
category, class and...

Winch Launch Stresses on Vintage Gliders by
Mike Schumann
Our club is exploring switching from aero tow to winch launching. Some of
our members own older wooden gliders and have expressed concerns about the
increased stress on the glider's structure resulting from winch launching
vs. aero tow.
Is this a valid concern?

Puchacz New Cautionary Tale/Tail by

Folks:
You will not yet find this on any accident/incident reports.
There were no fatalities.
A pilot called me to relay this story.
The SZD-50-3 Puchacsz was bought used from Europe and
imported to the US with ~1900 hours. The glider was given a US
airworthiness inspection, and licensed by an...

PowerFlarm at Region 9 Contest by

Here's a brief review of my experience with PowerFlarm at last week's Region 9 contest in Moriarty.
As some of you know, I've been a bit annoyed with some of my PowerFlarm experience - setup isn't really intuitive and it's hard to find all the info you need in the manual. The antennas are cheesy...

Solid state horizons by

Has anyone had any experiences, good or bad, with the various solid state
horizons on the market. Are they stable, is the response quick enough, are
they reliable.
(Probably only likely to get answers from UK pilots as the rest don't cloud
