Gold Distance, or Darwin award? by
Matt Herron Jr.
Yet another lawn chair flight: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/07/10/tech/main3040131.shtml
Looks like he covered over 300km. Shall we petition to have Judy give
him an honorary gold distance award? He wasn't carrying O2, so he
probably didn't bust class A. Don't know about other airspace...

GlidePlan Experience by
John Seaborn
In my experience a good printed map is critical for establishing
situational awareness even in the GPS world. Over the years we have
all done pretty much the same thing when flying a new site. We bought
the sectionals, cut and pasted them together, manually put on the
various waypoints provided on...

Thanks for all the wonderful ideas that have given
me a good few laughs. At present I'm trying to imagine
putting it in a trailer, and what might be able to
tow said trailer...

More 787 Thoughts by
David Pye[_2_]
I've heard they employ a rather revolutionary ballast
system for those occasional booming days which utilizes
fuel - guess it's lighter than water!
Just need to start loading the wings around 3am to
be ready for a launch at midday!
What's Vwinch - any ideas?

XC Sickness by
[email protected]
It's sad. Nobody warned me. I used to be happy just flying around
near the airport. I didn't have a truck. I didn't have a "crew", I
always knew where I was going to land.
They don't tell you that you won't be happy just flying around near
the airport after you've flown a little XC.
Does this...

Flap Settings by
Ken Kochanski (KK)
I understand, a wing will perform optimally when the flap is set at
the proper angle for the airspeed ... any mismatch of flap to airspeed
will result in some performance losses vs. the correct setting. Of
course, we have a couple of compromises here ... the flaps are set at
fixed increments and...

SF Bay Area Winter Soaring by
Michael Ash
I'm going to be in the SF Bay area for a conference in January 2008 and
I'm pondering the idea of taking some time afterwards to do some flying in
a new place. I'm looking to rent a glider and stay for a couple of days. I
have some questions for people familiar with the area:
How is the soaring...

USA/SSA-Members - FYI... by
Bob Whelan[_2_]
I happened to blunder into a recent posting from the FRTF on SSA's
website, dated July 9.
Any SSA member with genuine interest in SSA owes it to him-/her-self to
read it. I mention it here by way of FYI, since no one else has yet.
If anyone who does can figure out how to use the contact form...

Parowan Contest by
JMR
I flew two days with Karl Streidick in the back of his Duo Discus.
Simply put, it was nothing short of amazing. Funny thing, there was no
magic pixie dust, or voodoo magic, just simple thermal efficiency and
energy management. Oh yeah, he doesn't use a PDA or any of that fancy
software to get...

Diana-2 - master-piece or flop? by
BlueCumulus[_2_]
I have read very good critics about Diana-2
but as well very bad news about it.
The good news are from the people who seem to have flown the first two
Prototypes. The bad rumors I heard about number-3 of Diana-2.
Obviously the main difference is, that the wing position was shifted some
centimeters...
