Form One Questions by
jcarlyle
I’ve got two questions for European pilots regarding the Form One,
arising out of curiosity on my part.
First, it appears to this US pilot that one of the uses of a Form One
is to certify that a new part is airworthy, with the basis for
airworthiness being that the part was made in accordance with...

SeeYou v4.01 Maps by
jcarlyle
On the Naviter site, when you upgrade from SeeYou v3.95 to v4.01,
you're presented with an opportunity to buy Vector Maps. I searched
the Naviter site and their forums, and didn't find any information as
to why you might want to buy the Vector Map product. The description
of v4.01 of SeeYou clearly...

Stopping a Tail Tank Drip by
jcarlyle
Need some advice for stopping a drip (once per 20 seconds) from a tail
tank. I’m aware of using Vaseline / Chapstick / beeswax on under wing
dump valves, but what about on a tail tank? How would you even reach
it to goop it up (the seat is way up a 8 mm tube)?
The tank in question is a 5.5 liter...

Trig 1090ES ADS-B Receiver by

Trig has announced its 1090ES ADS-B receiver:
http://www.trig-avionics.com/press100726.html
http://www.trig-avionics.com/ta60.html
It's expected to ship somewhere near the end of 2010, and will cost
about $1800 in the US.
Unfortunately, it's only a receiver. If I read it right, it only...

ASW-20 Mystery Instrument by
jcarlyle
I was helping a friend with his ASW-20, and we took a mystery
instrument out.
The instrument consists of a small project box containing a single
layered printed circuit board, non-silk-screened, that holds 3
integrated circuits, a few resistor packs, a few capacitors and a 20K
trim pot. Etched...

DG's new requirements for older DG ships by
jcarlyle
I think it's significant that DG's Forum has gone silent. Probably DG
is holding it's corporate breath, waiting until the "grace" period has
expired, and hoping against hope that owners pony up some cash. I
don't think they're going to be happy...

Volkslogger Battery? by
jcarlyle
I've got one of the newer Volksloggers, with the rectangular connector
(hardware version 3.4, firmware version 3.6). No operating problem
with it, but I have a preventive maintenance question on the 10 year
old device.
Old messages on RAS mention the presence of an internal battery, and
say it's...

LS8 Panel in AutoCAD? by
jcarlyle
I've got an LS8, whose panel outline looks similar to these three on
the top of this site:
http://www.solairecanada.com/index2.htm
Would anyone have an AutoCAD file for this panel outline shape that
they'd be willing to share? I've tried DG and the LS group, with no
luck. I'm trying to see if I...

Optimum CG Range by
jcarlyle
There are summaries of Frank Irving’s 1981 OSTIV paper that say he
concluded the optimal CG for a standard class glider is 0.3 to 0.35 of
the Mean Aerodynamic Chord. DG’s web site has an entry that says the
2001 Akaflieg Braunschweig flight test results concluded best glider
results are obtained...

Wing Ballast Distribution by
jcarlyle
When you water ballast the four wing tanks of an LS8a you fill the
inner tanks first, and when you dump the water there’s provision for
the inner tanks to drain last. With a RS LS8-18 (and the newer DG LS8-
s) this procedure is reversed - the outer tanks are filled first and
there’s provision for...

Glider-Airliner Near Miss by

This was reported today in an article he http://tinyurl.com/233vbx
The other incident occurred May 5, when Continental Express Flight

into conflict with a glider 20 miles north of Sparta" at 7,000 feet,

iPAQ Touchscreen Difficulty by

Has anyone experienced touchscreen problems with their iPAQ in heat?
Any

landing in selecting the ConnectMe program in Settings, then in
commanding various actions to download. I'd get things above and below

Trig TT21 Transponder Thoughts? by
jcarlyle
I need to replace a Terra TRT250D (it's failed for the 5th time). The
only transponder that might fit into the Terra's rectangular cutout in
my crowded panel (if I do some horizontal filling) is the Trig TT21.
The Trig's specifications look good and it has an attractive price,
but it's brand new on...

20B Panel by
jcarlyle
Hi Guys
Does anyone have a 20B panel outline file that will work in Auto CAD
program. The 20B has a completely rounded top a flat bottom and steps
on both sides. It is different than a 19, 20A, and is the same as a
20C.
Thanks Norm

Any Known East Coast USA GPS Problems? by
jcarlyle
Back in Jan 2008 there was a thread about GPS interference testing,
specifically near China Lake. The last several weeks I've experienced
(near Philadelphia) a lot of "GPS Wait" messages from my Cambridge Gps-
Nav. At least 3 other pilots at Philadelphia Glider Council have also
reported having...

UAVs - a growing midair concern? by

Recently I've seen articles talking about the use of Predator UAVs (66
foot wingspan, 10,000 pound MTOW) along the US-Mexican border
(www.popularmechanics.com/science/air_space/4213464.html), as well as
tests of smaller (10 foot wingspan, 44 pound MTOW) UAVs by the Houston

Grounding of control tubes/cables by
jcarlyle
Poking around inside my fiberglass glider, I discovered a ground lead
from the rudder pedal/cable assembly to the negative electrical system
bus bar. Interestingly, there was no corresponding ground lead to the
metal aileron/elevator control rods.
Searching past posts to RAS, I discovered threads...

Help Sought on Cobra Trailer Lock by

trailer, one of the sliding rods in the locking mechanism...

Transponder for ASW-19 by

Is there any US pilot here who has installed a transponder in an
ASW-19? I'm trying to get a copy of a 337 for such an installation, to
help smooth the way at my FSDO.
