World-Wide Soaring Turnpoint Exchange by John Leibacher
Unfortunately, there are some issues with the primary site (soaringweb.org, and the mirror sites soaring.geichhorn.com, soaring.guenther-eichhorn.com, and soaring.gahsys.com), so their content may not be up-to-date, with a restoration of service probably not before the end of August ;-( However,...

Soaring Servers by John Leibacher
The principal server (http://soaringweb.org) is down, and may remain that way for a bit, but the two mirrors (http://soaring.gahsys.com) and (http://soaring.xinqu.net) are up and running just fine. It's a good idea to bookmark all three! Continuing thanks to Guenther Eichhorn, Glen Holden, and...

US International Team (Squad) Ranking by John Leibacher
The current rankings are now available at http://soaringweb.org/US_Team/. There have been significant changes to the rules, and the processes for generating the rankings have been completely re-written, so even though the rankings have been checked by many eyes there could well be glitches. If...

glider battery duration problems by John Marshall
I need advice about the best choice of batteries for an asg 29e. lithium ion would be outside manufacturer's remit and the insurer's plus too many risks-the fuel tank is directly above the battery housings. I would like something with at least 9 amp hours, whether gel cell or mh.

Ventus 2CT or 2CM or DG 808b or ASH26E or LS8t by John Mason
I intend to buy a state of the art new glider and I was looking at this choice. My main priority is to enjoy the flying and so I want good performance, nice handling and safe behaviour (no incipient spin tendency to keep me on edge). I am not sure if I will loose a lot of climb performance if I go...

Who first used water ballast and when? by John McCullagh
I want to find out the year when water ballast was first used. I believe it was George Tabery who first used it, but someone may prove me wrong. If anyone has access to Soaring magazine Nov 1981, it may give more details in Tabery's obituary there. Thank you

Antennae by John McCullagh[_2_]
I have a new glider on order and naturally I want to build-in all the things it will need over the next ten years at least, rather than adding things later piecemeal. In the non-carbon part of the fin I plan to have a radio aerial, a transponder aerial and a Flarm aerial. However it seems that...

Green band on ASI by John McCullagh[_2_]
This may seem a little academic, but definition of the lower limit of the green band on ASIs is inconsistent in places. EASA Certification Specifications for Sailplanes and Powered Sailplanes, CS 22.1545 (Air-speed indicator): "Each air-speed indicator must show the following markings: ... (c) for...

Advice re. Nimbus 3 OR 4Dt? by John McLaughlin
I'm just coming back into gliding after a long time grounded and I'm looking to buy a glider over the winter. A two seater seems a nice idea and the Nimbus seems to be a lot of glider for the money. Are they in any way difficult or unpleasant to fly? I know there have been structural failures...

Trailer access calculation? by John McLaughlin
I want to bring my trailer home to do some maintenance while we're all grounded, but I'm not sure if I can access my house from the road. I have a 90deg bend to get around and then the second issue is a short, steep slope, which may ground the back of the trailer. So my question is, if I...
