Blanik L23 Pneumatic Strut Part Needed by
Six-Seven
This is a long shot.
Our nitrogen filled pneumatic gear strut (shock absorber) on a Blanik L23 is flat. It appears that the fill valve is defective. Blanik America says that the factory is on summer vacation and it will be weeks to get the part we need.
Here is a picture of the part in...

Capital Gain/Loss when Selling Gliders? by
Six-Seven Romeo
I searched in RAS and didn't find anything about taxes.
I live in a state where they have sales tax on aircraft and when buying a glider for tens of thousands of dollars this can be a major impact. Maybe I need to move to Delaware and incorporate!
Sales tax aside, what about capital gain or loss...

Breakers as Switches - Good Idea? by
Six-Seven Romeo
I often see GA and gliders that use breakers as switches. Is this such a good idea? Are breakers rated to be used as switches? These aircraft usually, but not always, have at least a master switch.
Our tow plane uses Tyco W31 series breakers which incorporate bat handles and are designed to be...

Mounting Stuff on the Canopy or Glare Screen - Safe? by
Six-Seven Romeo
I am in the midst of an instrument panel refit on a Standard Cirrus that will include a PowerFLARM core. The mount of the FLARM antennas is always a lifely subject here on RAS. I have read and absorbed the very instructive FLARM antenna placement application note.
Anyway, someone mentioned to me...

Need Becker AR3201 Female 15 pin Latching Connector by
Six-Seven Romeo
I am installing a used Becker AR3201 transceiver for a friend. It didn't come with a harness. I can make the harness myself and could use a standard DB-15 connector. However, I would prefer to use the latching type connector that Becker specifies and you can see on the AR4201 and AR6201 (which...

Source of L'Hotellier Fittings? by
Six-Seven Romeo
Anyone know of a source for new l'hotellier fittings?
I received an email from the son of an home builder in the Ukraine asking about a source for these fittings. He found my name from my web site where I described adding wederkind sleeves to l'hotellier fittings on a DG glider.
One possible...

RC Drones versus RC Helicopters by
Six-Seven Romeo
Forgive me if this should go to an R/C blog instead of RAS but I think that there are many glider drivers that like flying drones.
The Chicago Tribune ran an article today on the FAA's proposed rules for the "use of commercial drones". The full text is below. Highlights for operators are;
A...

Plumbing and Static Sources by
Six-Seven Romeo
I looked in the RAS archives for an article that delved into my question below. No dice. So here goes.
Consider for a moment two gliders and the multiple static pressure sources found within (tee'd left/right);
Ventus CM (Motor Glider)
1) Under the wings
2) On the sides of the boom about 6 ft...

Wood glider outdoor storage by
Sky Surfer
Random question (kinda): Can an all-wood homebuilt glider be tied down outside year-round in a dry climate (e.g., Colorado) and be weather-protected by padded covers? The glider's plywood skin is covered by a layer of thin fiberglass, then painted. I guess I'm asking for actual experience or...

Cobra Trailer by

My Cobra trailer is difficult to open and close in colder weather. It
seems to be with the struts. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
