hydraulic disk brake upgrade by shkdriver
Hello, Has anyone done a disc brake replacement of an original drum brake? I have reverse engineered a replacement 400x4 wheel for my SHK-1 which uses a hydraulic disk and caliper, and a beringer stick mounted lever master cylinder all employing dot 4 brake fluid, (EPDM seals throughout) The...

FAI Sporting Code Section 3 experts wanted by Stewart Kissel
I googled this and could not find an answer...and I reread the Code last night...so forgive my denseness...but I cannot figure out--- For a distance task with 3 TP's and no Start Point or Finish Point declared...does the release from tow have to be the start or can it be declared post flight? If...

Ventus A and B Wing Root Fairings by [email protected]
The Ventus A and B models really need a good wing root fairing. Schempp-Hirth realized their mistake years ago, and offered a simple aftermarket fiberglass fairing mod kit. I installed mine during the early 80s, and it really helped the low speed performance. I think it may still be possible to...

OLC - Action Needed by Ian Cant
This OLC validation problem affects us all by turning away a large proportion of participants and thus devaluing the meaning of the contest. I have sent the following e-mail to and copied it to to see if we can get some corrective action. I would encourage...

First Glider by Jeff Runciman
Thanks for all of the advise. I may have to get a glider in between 30 and 35 ld. I am concerned about getting in deeper than I should and not having fun. It is possible that I should get a club class glider due to my hang gliding experience (tighter turn radius?). A PW5 or Russia may be an...

Variometer installation by [email protected]
I have a Pilatus B4 and wish to install an ILEC audio variometer. A TE probe on the tail is not going to happen, for a number of reasons. So I guess my choice is either a fuselage mounted probe, or no probe at all..which I guess would give me an uncompensated variometer. any advice for me, a...

Could this be used in a sailplane? by Spam
If I had one of these ...... http://www.batterystuff.com/solar-chargers/ ......would I be able to fly continously without ever removing the battery and charging it overnight? I figured there's alot of smart folks on here who have already thought this through!

Glider flight software on non PDA devices- soon. by brianDG303
Lots of us run flight software on a PDA and complain about the dim and hard to read screen and can't help noticing those big bright GPS's we get to drive around with. It looks like SeeYou Mobile will soon run on some GPS platforms and it's now in beta running on the HP IPAQ 310 (Travel Companion)...

Navworx ADS-B Transceiver gets FCC Authorization by Mike Schumann
It looks like the low cost ADS-B UAT logjam has been broken: http://www.aopa.org/advocacy/articles/2010/100721navworx.html?WT.mc_id=100723epilot&WT.mc_sect=gan While the price is somewhat higher than I would like to see, it's competitive with buying a transponder coupled with a Zaon PCAS XRX. ...

I would like to try XCSoar but am having trouble installing the program on my iPaq 4705. When I go to the XCSoar site on my PC and follow the instructions to download the latest version (5.2.4) I am directed to a site with .cab files. No .exe files. After downloading what appears to be the...

Spin training for US pilots? by Sean F (F2)
I did spin training in CA shortly after recieving my glider license. It has been very helpful for me as I have continued along with glider flight. How many of you, US pilots, have had formal spin instruction (not one spin but half a day or more)? Personally I am amazed that a US glider pilot can...

Why does PW-5 get no respect? by ISoar
Newbie here. I ran across a joke that said the market value for a used PW-5 was based entirely on what the instruments and trailer were worth. It appears this issue was beaten to death at one time, but I'm curious for a paragraph or two explanation of why the ship gets no respect. Thanks

I understand that you want to fly for a few more years. Please install Powerflarm (so that I can see you coming). You can turn the volume down. You don't have to learn how to use it.
