Ever had an ongoing contest moved to another site? by
Steve Koerner
Within my club there is some controversary surrounding the question of
whether or not there might exist precedent for moving an ongoing
contest to an airport other than the airport that had been originally
intended. Whereas it is not resonable to take the entirity of our
little club issue to this...

US contest scoring formula is broken by
Steve Koerner
Over the last several years I've found it quite annoying that I cannot
read the rules and understand the US scoring formula. The
calculation of US scores has become encumbered with so many correction
factors, devaluation factors and the like that mere mortals cannot
relate soaring performance to...

Some technical considerations related to Spot tracking performance by
Steve Koerner
In another thread today, the issue of Spot tracking performance came
up. In particular, it was pointed out that several pilots at the
ongoing Senior's contest were experiencing long periods of missed
tracking reports. This is an area that I have personally investigated
recently. I gave a...

More grist for the battle of the battery by

Larry Goddard wrote:

one option is to put a Schottky diode (of sufficient

Darn good idea, Larry. Even if you aren't...

Anyone have a Piep Audio Vario? by
Steve Leonard
I have one in my newly acquired Ka-8, and one in my
spares drawer. Sorry, but it is going to go to one
of my clubs ships sometime soon.
RICO also made a stand-alone like the PIEP. You might
see if he has any left. Probably doesn't , but it
would be worth a call or e-mail. And I have plans
for...

Ease of attaching and detaching by
Steve Leonard
Not meaning to bag on them, but I have NEVER been around
an Astir of any kind that went together easily. I
am not a real fan of the 'twist to lock' front and
rear fittings. Someone, please tell me they can go
easy!
Of the rest, they can all be good. Get the seller
to walk you through assembling...

BS-1 N10PE by
Steve Leonard
I am trying to find this sailplane. It was brought to the US in 1970
or so by Elmer Katinszky. It then went to the East Coast in 1979, then
to the Pacific Northwest in 1980, and returned to Souther California in
about 1984. Sometime between 1984 and February 1987, the aircraft was
destroyed. At...

Well, maybe this once. And rather dramtically, I
might ad. If this had happened in Minnesota, I would

Let's talk ground launching..... by
Steve Leonard
As to the question of 'Should we use a chute?' If
you are using rope (plastic), I think the answer is
a resounding 'NO'. Let it fall to the ground. It
will not kink or snarl. If you put a chute on plastic
ropes, the end will just land further from the runway
in the inevitable...

Roy, you hit the nail on the head. Advice on RAS is
worth exactly what you pay for it. In my case, $9.95
per month for my dial-up (yeah, and I don't have a
cell phone either!) interent access. Pilot ability
and how you react to things that are different than
what you have seen before is what...

Becker Radio Repair by
Steve Leonard
Ted,
If you want to try wiring in a different mic (and flipping
a switch under the cover of the radio to change to
the other mic style setting), the wiring diagram is
available at:

Assuming here that it is a 4201 you have. Otherwise,

Becker radio repair by
Steve Leonard
Might want to wire up for and try a hand mic before
you ship your radio off, Ted. I have heard of several
people (My Dad, for one) that have had boom mics go
bad. Works fine with the hand mic, and worked fine
when a new boom mic was installed.

Auto Tow Information by

I am a bit disappointed to see this thread going the
way the Yahoo Winch design group did. I still watch
there and am interested in what comes of it. It started
off (Or so I thought) with the notion of designing
a simple but reliable winch that a small group of people
could afford to build so a...
