Arcus-J video by
airshowbob[_3_]
The Arcus-J is flying. Here is a video taken during its first few test flights in Moriarty:
https://youtu.be/HQVWCASrZyw
As most of you have probably seen, its first three OLC flights were pretty impressive, with a combined distance of ~4,300 km. It is certainly a testament to the exceptional...

Ardoin Turnpoint in Marfa area? by
chris
I was looking on the map trying to figure out some of the tasks that
Moffat wrote about in Winning on the Wing. In that book and his July
2003 Soaring article he writes about tasks using a turnpoint - the
town of "Ardoin". I cannot find Ardoin on a map of TX or NM.
Does anyone know where this...

Are air filters necessary on Pitot, static or TE lines? by
Pete[_9_]
Hey all,
I have noticed some gliders have what look like small fuel filters spliced into the tubing prior to avionics. I imagine this is a safeguard to dust, etc entering the avionics. Seems to make sense eventually what's outside is going to get inside....
However, is this necessary? I see a lot...

Are All Batteries Created Equal? (Does Size Matter?) by
[email protected]
Anyone have any experience with the 12-volt PowerSonic PSH-12100 10.5
AH sealed lead-acid battery? It's the same "footprint" (length and
width) as the 7.5 AH batteries most of us use but about 2/3 inch (17
mm) taller.
PowerSonic rates its own PSH-1280--the size most of us use--at 8.5 AH
which is...

Are areas of sink modeled well in Condor2? by
Charles Ethridge
Question for those of you who fly with Oudie and Condor2:
While sink near thermals seem to be modeled well in Condor2, some people in our club do not think that Condor models areas of sink outside of thermals (between clouds) very well.
In other words, when they fly cross-country in real life...

Are off-airport landouts common and/or dangerous? by
Charles Ethridge
Hi all.
First off, I was a fairly experienced CFI and Chief Flight Instructor with a great record, and am now a Commercial Glider Pilot, so I'm not a total newbie in the glider world.
I realize that my initial question may be obvious to some, but here in South Florida, we NEVER land out in fields...

Are OLC and Contest Soaring really that different? by
Sean Fidler
Some observations:
OLC:
Get in your glider and go as far as you can, as fast as you can. Start whenever you want. Turn in your file and you’re done. Before the flight you look at the weather and plan to use it to maximize your flight distance within the given local & conditions. 1000+...

Are Weak Links really Necessary for Aero Tow? by
[email protected]
A lot of the clubs here tow with thickish (5/8 inch and some 1/2inch)
poly and nylon ropes, without weak links, and pilots with years of
experience say that no load exerted by the glider can damage the tug -
and in the worst of cases even a 5/8 rope will break before damaging
the Tug (Most often...

are wooden gliders worthwhile building ? by
Stealth Pilot[_2_]
serious question.
in this day and age where the slippery glass reigns supreme are there
any wooden gliders actually worth building ?
if your son was on the way to a glider instructors rating, as mine is,
is there a wooden glider design that would be worth building ?
something with reasonable...

Are You Ashamed to Land Out? by
[email protected]
Read the article regarding the diminishment of guys pursuing badges and a commonly held misconception that it takes greater than 30/1 to do xc, another thought came to mind. Namely, is there a stigma attached to landing out within the modern soaring community? Could this be a reason why guys are...
