SSA Return to Kitty Hawk Link by Tom Serkowski
We had a schedule to adhere to, just like any other soaring contest. My observation was that if we had the opportunity to to sit around for 4-5 days at each site waiting for good weather, it may have been possible to soar most of the way. I second DJ's comments about it all being worth it, though....

Racing Survey and 500 foot rule by Tom Seim
I just submitted my survey (hey, I've got a couple of days to spare). I recommended that the 500 foot finish rule (the question regarding this rule just asked whether you or not you supported it) be modified to a less Draconian version. My version is a penalty of a point per foot (come in at 400...

Blipmaps by Tom Ruble
At the risk of 'preaching to the choir' I wonder what the first responses have been to DrJack's new subscription program. Hopefully there will be a flood of subscriptions to ease DrJack's toothache (mentioned on his site) - and most importantly that we all help out by encouraging our fellow club...

PowerFlarm Core and RS232 by Tom Roth
I'm confused about the RS232 feature with my PowerFlarm core. The manual decribes the interface as RS232 but doesn't mention the voltage levels. Is it the voltage levels called out in the standard (-3 to -15, +3 to +15) or are these digital voltage levels (0, 5) with the RS232 protocol? I see...

ENSIGN HANGARS by Tom Rent
I am the author of the recent article on the 15m Ensign Sailplane Hangars in SOARING. We are please with the ones we've built at Stanton Airfield in Minnesota and welcome other clubs and FBOs to learn about these quality kits. We recently determined that shipment to Europe is much lower than one...

Sailplane Hangar Doors by TOM RENT
Anyone have any information on 52 foot-wide hangar doors for individual glider hangars? I know about the various Bifold types, but looking for ones only 8 foot tall or so, rolling, hanging, or swing style. Not much out there on small hangars for gliders other than the Ensign design. Our desire is...

Weak link - single or reserve? by Tom Nau
Hi All, Our commercial operation (more like a club) is starting to do winch launches. I just bought a Tost weak link for my glider from W&W. Are most people using a "single" weak link or a "single and a reserve" weak link? Thanks. Tom Nau

Airstart reliability by Tom Nau
A friend of mine recently was involved in an outlanding accident. It seems as though having an engine on-board would help to avoid outlandings and therefore outlanding accidents. If there are any generalities to be made, which are generally more reliable for airstarts - sustainer systems or...

Water ballast rookie question by Tom Nau
I fly an ASW-28. The under-surface of the wing has a nice little piece of plastic that covers the dump valve and which is hinged by a piece of cloth tape. When flying with water ballast my assumption is that correct procedure is to leave the piece of plastic in place, but open and hanging down from...

Any opinions? I plan to install a new Becker transponder in my ASW-28. Should I go with the old mode C unit or pay extra for the new mode S unit? Thanks.

Transfer of IGC log for contest scoring by Tom N.
Hello all, I plan to fly in my first contest this summer. What is the best (easiest) way to transfer my IGC flight log to the scorer? I use a Cambridge 302 and IPAQ 3955. For the OLC, I download the file to my IPAQ using ConnectMe and the take the IPAQ home and connect it to my PC and then...
