SAR and Medical Evacuation related 'insurance/products' by
son_of_flubber
I never buy the 'Extended Warranty' on gadgets, but I wonder what people thing about insurance to cover the cost of SAR and/or Medical Evacuation.
For example http://www.inreachdelorme.com/product-info/geos-search-and-rescue.php
They do exclude coverage for accidents related to 'hang-gliding'...

R2D2 robotic cameraman (soloshot) by
son_of_flubber
Looks like fun. This device keeps a camera pointed at a RF tag bearing target. You can mount the cameraman on one glider and point it at another.
http://shop.soloshot.com/ third generation coming soon.

Practical Wave Flying - Revised Edition by
son_of_flubber
I'm reading 'Practical Wave Flying - Revised Edition' by Mark Palmer Copyright 1989 That's 26 years old.
Is there anything considered out-of-date or outright wrong in this book? Are there new areas of relevant knowledge that are not touched upon by this book?
This is supplemental reading. ...

Use of ridge lift for tow - review of procedure/protocol by
son_of_flubber
What are the best practices for using ridge lift when towing?
What is different when the ridge altitude is increasing?
Should the tow plane approach the ridge perpendicular at the saddle (rather than at a 45)? What if circumstances force you to release at this point (pointed straight at the...

Electrical continuity of control linkages and electrical instruments by
son_of_flubber
I had the seat pan out of my glider and I noticed that there are several braided wires connecting the metal stick to other metal parts and the (-) side of the power distribution block, battery, and (via power distribution wires) to the (-) of the electrical instruments (with small fuses on each...

Line Crew lessons learned by
son_of_flubber
Most glider ports have a standardized procedure for 'the one right way' for line crew to operate in normal and abnormal launch situations.
It would be useful to catalog the minor and major mistakes that people make in glider ground operations, the incorrect deviations from the standardized...

Outdated ways of thinking about digital content by
son_of_flubber
I'm a member of SSA, OSTIV and NSM (Soaring museum at Harris Hill).
SSA puts digital versions of Soaring magazine behind a pay wall (only available to members).
OSTIV puts archives and current publications behind a paywall.
Now NSM is trying to raise $15-20000 to digitize historical soaring...

In wave, in blue hole at cloud level, hole closes, in IMC, then what? by
son_of_flubber
So I'm flying in a blue hole in wave lift of 5 m/s, trimmed to 50 knots, in clear air with a cloud layer upwind and downwind, cloud top above and cloud base below. Suddenly I find myself in IMC. What are my options?
My glider is capable of benign spiral. I open the spoilers, (already trimmed to...
