Electronic declaration (for Volkslogger) by
stephanevdv
There seems to be some problems with Volkslogger declarations generated
by other than the Volkslogger DOS software (that won't work reliably on
many recent Windows computers), e.g. the sector definition can change
(it happens when I make a WinPilot declaration and upload it to
Volkslogger).
I find...

Schweizer 2-32 by
stephanevdv
I'm coming to the USA in a few days (first trip to America). It's not a
soaring vacation, but I'd like to find the opportunity to put one more
sailplane type in my logbook. Where in the California/Nevada region
could I make a dual flight in a 2-32? Any...

Altimeter settings: QNH versus QFE by
stephanevdv
Just another point in this discussion: when I look at an approach map of
an airfield, the pattern altitude is expressed as a height above
ground. To me, this means the easiest way of complying is to fly QFE
when entering the pattern (no mathematics needed) - providing of course
you can get the...

Motorgliders burning after crashing? by
stephanevdv
I remember some pictures of a carbon fibre pure glider that caught fire
when it hit some high tension wires during an outlanding. The pilot had
time to walk away (and was luckily able to do so), but couldn't
extinguish the fire. Most of the fuselage and part of the wing burned
up. The fire was...

Frozen spoilers by
stephanevdv
Probably the strangest incident of this kind happened in the sixties to
the well-known pioneer of alpine flight, Jochen von Kalckreuth. See his
book: Das stille Abenteuer (The silent adventure - I don't now if it
has ever been translated to English)
He was cloud-flying over northern Italy in an...

Why does the Sporting code require by
stephanevdv
Let's say for some reason I had stored in the FR three different
declarations made on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
As far as I know, it is impossible to have different declarations in
one FR! What you can have is different flight plans, tasks or whatever
you wish to call them. But the only...

wood in aircraft manufacturing, was First Glider by
stephanevdv
You can trust a tree, but you can't trust a glue. Due to a catastrophic
in-flight failure of a Robin DR 400 wing, the French authorities
discovered badly glued wingspars in a lot of airplanes of this type.
Consequently, reinforcements have been made mandatory (C.N. 2003-348).
To see how this is...

Checklist 101 (was How Low to Spin?? by
stephanevdv
About the correct order of actions in a checklist: what about putting in
last what you actually want to do last?
When I first learned to soar, one of the first items in the oral
checklist was: canopy closed and locked. I promptly inverted that with
the last item (it was the same initial K in...

Cheap GPS Loggers for FAI Badges - FAI Footdragging by
stephanevdv
I already asked this in another thread concerning the same subject,
without getting an answer:
Why should every pilot have his own personal flight recorder? If there
is one per glider, this will be more than enough! In fact, it never
happens that all gliders on a site are busy with competition...

Safety against commercial pressure? by

I prefer to start this new thread rather than to pollute the original, related to the recent fatal Teton crash. I have some reservations concerning this posting:

Cobra trailer gas spring by
Stephanie and Ed
I have an early 1990's vintage Cobra trailer with a front hatch. The gas
spring that holds the hatch up has deteriorated, and I'd like to replace it.
I've emailed both Cobra and the German gas spring manufacturer with no
response. I can see that the length of the gas spring is critical to the...

Thermal prediction software by
Stephanie and Ed
I was at Parowan a few years ago for a nationals contest and saw a software
product that imports Blipmap data and then generates a map with a series of
circles containing themal heights and updraft predictions for a gridded
area. Can anyone recall the name?

Air to air photography by
Stephen Cook
At my club we want to take some air to air photographs of a glider for
promotional purposes. Does anyone have any useful experience they can pass
on?
Questions I'm thinking of:
What is a suitable camera aircraft? I imagine another glider is not the
easiest for getting the camera where you...
