Dashing Crosswind by Papa3[_2_]
Looks like a classic (though brutally cold) ridge day shaping up in the Appalachians. As of now we've got about a half-dozen hearty souls on task from Blairstown including the usual suspects in 1-26s. At least 3 of the guys are carrying spot trackers, so check them out on the SSA Sailplane...

400 miles by Tony[_5_]
With Sports Class Nationals cut short, Bob and I left Uvalde at 7 AM monday with the Silent 2 Electro in tow. It rained pretty constantly through most of the hill country but by 9 AM we could see the edge of cloudy skies. I had been looking at the soaring forecasts the night before and thought...

Trailer surface preparation by Colin Roney
My plan is to remove patches of algae embedded in the GRP surface before painting. So far, i`ve rubbed/cleaned down the surface as much as I can using wire brush and glasspaper. Any ideas on the most effective product to use please?

CAUTION Wake Turbulence by [email protected]
As more & more pilots are aquiring self-launching or touring motorgliders they may find themselves flying from fields with private jet or tanker traffic. Last weekend I was taxing my ASH-26e out to take-off from end of 34 at Minden. Most gliders are towed off of 30 so this usually isn't even an...

LX-Nav S80 settings by Mark628CA
I just installed an LX-Nav S80 and remote stick controller, and while I am mostly impressed with the hardware, the operating manual is sorely lacking in many areas. When trying to enter the value for ballast weight, you have a choice between overload, weight, lb/sqft and kg/m2. Absolutely no...

I learned yesterday that Jan Driessen flew his 25,000th glider flight at Seminole Lake glider port in Florida. Jan (pronounced Yon) and also known as CP or Chili Pepper, pioneered soaring in the late 70's in the Montague, Shasta Valley area. He presently has a permanent residence near Weed...

The up and down sides of rotors relative to ridges by son_of_flubber
Mulling over a wave flight from last October and realized that I'd gotten it into my head (perhaps erroneously) that the up (lift) side of rotor is usually closer to the upwind ridge than the down side (sink) of the rotor. So for example, if I persist in heading closer towards the slope/ridge...

Blanik L23 Pneumatic Strut Part Needed by Six-Seven
This is a long shot. Our nitrogen filled pneumatic gear strut (shock absorber) on a Blanik L23 is flat. It appears that the fill valve is defective. Blanik America says that the factory is on summer vacation and it will be weeks to get the part we need. Here is a picture of the part in...

Anyone had a winch drum failure? by Bret Hess
We're making a new winch drum. The flanges on our drum bent out a little when moving from steel to Spectra line. I'd like to know the dimensions and structure of any drums/flanges that have failed, or shown signs of failing, and with what length and type of line. Please pass this on to anyone...

ASG29 Panel (small) layout ideas for ClearNav II installation by Sean Fidler
If anyone has any recent CAD or sketches of CNII instrument layouts in an ASG29 with the smaller panel size, I would be appreciative. Examples of completed installs are very welcomed as well. If I do this, I have not decided if I would do both varios (nav diplay or needle) or just one. I...

Early March Soaring? by Minot Moonshiners
I'm a power pilot by trade. I got back into gliders this summer. Commercial and CFI-G. Got checked out to teach and tow. I did a fair amount of glider flying in my college years (20 years ago) L-13 mostly. This summer I flew at Franconia NH. Grob, L23 and of course the 2-33. I'd like to...
