Attention US Standard Class Pilots by [email protected]
The US competition Rules Committee is considering doing a one time test of limited handicapping in the Standard Class at the 2012 nationals in Montegue. This would be done under a waiver. The objective is to try to improve participation and determine if this is an effective means of doing so. All...

Our New Club Ship Becoming Reality by Bob Youngblood
Since the start of our club three years ago we have been looking at the possibility of buying a new club ship. We are looking at the ASK21 and the DG1001. Funding has always been difficult, in this small start up environment it is almost impossible to obtain the amount of monies necessary to pull...

Pitot/static leak issues when using a "squat switch" by [email protected]
Darryl, Ramy, Williams, et al After installing a squat switch (such as the Peregrine brand), did your plumbing pass a pitot/static leak test? I have heard gossip of the Peregrine switch having pitot/static leak issues. Is there another approved squat switch known not to leak?

Alternative magnetic compass by [email protected]
A sailplane's Flight Manual usually requires a magnetic compass (or an aviation compass)as minimum equipment. Well, panel space has become less available and you are seeing fewer sailplanes with panel or glare-shield mounted 2.25 Airpath C2xxx or PAI-700 aircraft specific compasses. Anyone have a...

Towing by Roger Fowler
I recently rode with a towpilot who leaned the engine aggresively after retarding throttle at the start of the descent. While he is probably correct that it slows the rate of cylinder cooling significantly, I had never seen it done before. Is anyone else using this procedure?

IGC Google Earth Replay by [email protected]
may be someone is interested in a small programm ( http://ywtw.de/igcsim.html ) that allows you to replay IGC-files in Google Earth. It's a replay, without use of kml, best for flights in the mountains :-)

Libelle Camelbak stowage by Martin Gregorie
A long while back somebody (Ian Molesworth?) mentioned "lashing a Camelbak under the beam supporting the stick" in a Standard Libelle. With the season visible on the horizon I'm wondering how he did that. There's obviously sufficient space available under the beam and little chance of fouling...

LiFePO4 Batteries by vontresc
So I am in the market for a new battery for my Libelle. I was thinking it might be time to upgrade to a LiFePO4 battery. Any recommendations/reviews from the community? I've seen people using the K2 and Stark Power batteries. Any preference between the two? Thanks Peter

Military GPS testing started yesterday on the west coast... by Matt Herron Jr.
(per FAA Flight Advisory) You might want to factor this in to your badge or record attempts as the GPS trace may be unusable or have holes in it. This would be especially true at higher elevations like wave flights. The effected area is huge, covering most of Nevada and southern California. For...

Proposed SZD-55 EASA AD now out for comment - "Flight Controls – Elevator Control System / Vertical Tail – Inspection" by Dan Daly[_2_]
Comment period ends 5 April. It would require an inspection within 60 days to ensure the elevator control attachment slot on the vertical stab be measured. That TLAR doesn't look right by [email protected]
In the latest edition of Soaring magazine there is an article about TLAR. For those not familiar with TLAR, it is a landing approach teaching method that is based on angles as opposed to elevations and distances. Using angles automatically compensates for variations in altitude. On downwind , if...
