Don't Read, Don't Respond by
JJ Sinclair
The members of ras. have enjoyed a year of helpful and rigorous discussion
about soaring issues. There are a few who never have anything to offer and only
want to argue. I urge you to DON'T READ & DON'T RESPOND to these posters. I
have 3 on my list of people that I NEVER READ & NEVER RESPOND TO....

Mylar (again) by
JJ Sinclair
I installed Mylar on my ship last spring and I followed all the guide-lines.
Sanded the underside of the Mylar and the corresponding side of the wing with
220 grit. I wiped everything down and rolled the Mylar down with considerable
pressure.
Half way through my first contest this spring, I found...

Final Glide for Don Dorrell by
JJ Sinclair
December Soaring has Don Dorrell listed under Final Glide. Does anyone have
details on his death? The Don Dorrell that I knew was a young guy and as you
all know that means anybody younger than me. Sad news, Don was a good racing
pilot and always fun to be around. His wife, Joy, was just that, a...

JJ Sinclair
Hi Gang, Me again.
Just got my copy of Eagle Call, which is the official publication of the
California Wing of the Civil Air Patrol. They participated in the search for
the downed ASW-20 out of Hemet Ryan wit 43 personnel, 4 corprate and 5 private
aircraft.
They flew 217 hours looking for a Cessna...

On-Star* by
JJ Sinclair
Just saw an On-Star commercial, went something like this:
Mrs. Jones, This is your On-Stat advisor. I show an air-bag deployment and
automatic activation of your on-star system, on Route 16, north of Albany, are
you all right?
Mrs. Jones, Nooooooo!
On-Star advisor, I'm calling the State Police...

Antenna Inatallation? by
JJ Sinclair
I'm going to install an antenna with a ground plane tube on the lower portion
(about 24 inches) Question; Is it OK to mount the antenna on the side of my
motorhome with only the antenna portion sticking up above the roof ?
Just got us a TREK with the bed that raises up to the ceiling, don't even...

Soaring magazine by
JJ Sinclair
For the first time in 20 years, I sat down and read Soaring magazine, cover to
cover. Good stuff in there, all interesting. The 2 accident write-ups were hard
hitting, factual information that just might prevent a similar occurance.
George Thelen described an ASW-20 that hit the trees, I believe...

New Task by
JJ Sinclair
Last week at William's Octoberfest, we used some new tasking ideas; Contestants
were told to pick ont turn-point from the Northern task area and on from the
Southern task area. Start at Lutz lake with unlimited altitude, 2:00 Minimum
Time and handicap the speeds. Great results with something like a...

Motorgliders (long) by
JJ Sinclair
There are several questions concerning motorgliders on this years SSA / SRA
pilot poll. Some of the questions may have been spurred by my letter dated 7/11
03 which follows
Members of the rules committee,
A few years back, we allowed motorgliders to have their engines...

How about some feedback on issues discussed on ras?
Dr Jack, How did you fix your plugged probe hole?
Kirk, What did you find out about adding zig-zag to your LS-6 stab?

Am I insured? by
JJ Sinclair
Just checked my policy and it said a number of things about my pilot license,
but nothing specifically about not breaking FAR's. It said my pilot license
must not be suspended or revoked and that I must be current. This would include
a biannual and those 3 takeoffs and landings within the last 90...

Cal(E)fornia has a new Gov(E)nator by
JJ Sinclair
Arnold has sworn to repeal the tripling of our car tax, so we will still be
able to drive to the gliderport. So there, It's about soaring! No hate mail,
please. I hear N(E)vade is working on a new Governator also.

Cleaning TE probe - is this a good idea ? by
JJ Sinclair
Good luck on getting high enough, this time of year, to generate enough
pressure to dislodge the pesky little critters. Seriously, I have used an air
bottle with about 50 psi in it to blow out the TE probe hole. Give it very
short bursts, like sssttt, then wait and hit her...

Elevator Turbulator tape question by
JJ Sinclair
I'm planning on trying turbulator tape (zig-zag, probably) on the
horizontal tail of my Ls-6, in front of the elevator. Anyone have any
experience doing this?
I added .4 mm ziz-zag to to the elevator of my LS-7 and it changed the stall
dramatically. Before adding it, the ship stalled like an...

High Speed Passes & the FAA (long) by

Good report Tom,
What's happening here? JJ being civil to a MG pilot? John Cochrane and I are
bud's over the 500 foot gate (still got a needle in your doll, over the +15
minute thing)
By Spring we'll all be Kissin' Cousins.
I would add one thing though, you wrote
If the pilot kills himself...

WAX ? by
JJ Sinclair
I'm new to this sport and have a few questions about waxing my ship. Some say
NEVER wax because if you ever get wet, you will come down like a STONE. Others
say you MUST wax to ward off the TERRIBLE affects of moisture and UV. I'm
confused, can anyone help?
One more thing, what kind of wax is BEST...

High Speed Passes & the FAA by
JJ Sinclair
Isn't there an FAR that says aviators will not fly below 500 feet, if over
people, places or things, unless they are in the act of landing? This question
was asked by a pilots wife/crew at a nationals. Her motorhome was located on a
permanently closed runway about 500 feet from the active runway....

MacCready in the Mountains by
JJ Sinclair
I fly a lot in the mountains and find MacCready speed-to-fly information,
completely worthless. Let me explain; Before crossing a ridge, I will fly
slower (below MC), so that I'm assured of making the next ridge. After crossing
the ridge, I may fly faster than MacCready. If I set the proper MC...
