Interesting wingtip by
Luke Szczepaniak
Came across this the other day.. The wingtip belongs to an Eurotech E-310 drone.

Looks like a mix of a standard winglet and the experimental tip on the...

Reminder to SPOT and InReach Sat tracker users... by
Sean Fidler
All,
This is probably rudimentary but today I have noticed several pilots today with Sat Trackers but no tracking during their flights.
Remember that if you are flying in some "big" soaring location (or even your local club) with a SAT tracker that is NOT automatically "tracking" (pinging...

Water ballast rookie question by
Tom Nau
I fly an ASW-28. The under-surface of the wing has a nice little piece
of plastic that covers the dump valve and which is hinged by a piece
of cloth tape. When flying with water ballast my assumption is that
correct procedure is to leave the piece of plastic in place, but open
and hanging down from...

Typical glide angles with airbrakes deployed by
Ronald Locke
Can anyone help with references for glide ratios for basic training gliders, Blanik, K13, Puchatek etc, with full brake or half brake deployed?
The internet is not very helpful for finding this information. A reference of 29 to 1 for a K6 -no brake and 7.1 full brake is about all I can...

US Airspace and Airport Data Update by
2KA
Updated US airspace information for the charting cycle effective 23
September , 2010 is now (a little belatedly) available on my website
at http://www.soaringdata.info. Due to some technical difficulties,
it hasn't yet been posted on the airspace section of the Worldwide
Soaring Turnpoint...

Book recommendations on weather please by
smithcorp
G'day
I'm a student glider pilot, just post-solo, looking for a good book on
meteorology for gliding that my wife can give me for my birthday.
Since Wallington's Meteorology for Glider Pilots is out of print and
available copies are prohibitively expensive, I'd appreciate
recommendations for other...

50 years of space (Not related to soaring) by
Bill Daniels
I remember vividly a cold dark night in the New Mexico desert. It was
1957 and the Russians had just launched Sputnik. The USAF needed help
obtaining orbital data for the worlds first satellite.
I found myself, a 16 year old high school science club member, at a
theodolite staring at the star...

Mounting cameras by
keithw
Another style more widely used in the entertainment/movie industry is
called Cloth Backed Gaffers Tape. It features a strong cloth backing,
not plastic and a better adhesive. It will not turn to mush and leave
gobs of hard to clean off adhesive all over your finish. Its available
in a number of...

Training Day before SSA Convention by
Paul Remde
Hi,
The SSA has asked me to organize "Soaring Products Training" the day before
the start of the SSA Convention in Texas. Last year it was called the
"Software Academy" and was a great success. WinPilot, SeeYou, StrePla and
Glide Navigator II held training sessions on their products. More than...

Topic Suggestions Wanted for 2006 SSA Convention by
Bob Gibbons
Almost a decade ago the SSA Convention was held in Dallas (1997). As
we prepared for that earlier convention I solicited this group for
topic suggestions. I got a lot of good suggestions and comments.
I would again like to solict both US and international pilots for
their suggestions as to topics...

Electronic versus Pneumatic compensation (follow-up) by
[email protected]
For you instrument installation experts out there, I'd like to pick
your brain if you have a circular tuit.
My new glider (a Ventus 2C) came with a Sage (model CV) vario, Winter
ASI and altimeter, and nothing else that connects to pressure sources.
Last week a Cambridge 302 and a new LX7000 were...

Discus Prandtl tube by
Serge Serfaty
On the vertical fin of the original Discus, there are
3 holes. one for securing the elevator, one where the
total energy antenna fits in and in between a small
tube that sticks out about an inch and a half and is
chromed.
It looks to me that it could be a Prandlt tube. Unfortunately
it is plugged...

Schleicher K 13 aerobatic approval by
James Rizzo Esq
We are examining the Type Certiifcate for the K13. The original indicates
aerobatics including spins "not approved".
in 1967 Schleicher issued an AD approving semi aerobatics and spins, and
printed a modified page 22 to the flight manual. Does this automatically
modify the type certificate? ...
