nothing.

Sailplane Buyer's Guide? by
Itsaplane[_2_]
I've often found myself wishing for a Sailplane Buyer's Guide (hey, I
can dream can't I?). It would compare manufactures, models, flapped
vs. non-flapped, comparitive polars, pilot satisfaction scores, flight
reviews, safety track record, etc., etc.
The closest resources I've found a

PDA for Moving Map by
brian whatcott
I know it sounds unlikely for someone seeking to put a yoke mount moving
map in his 150 to be seeking advice from a soaring group, but here I am...
I have a whole lot of sales resistance to the Garmin 626's or whatever
of this world, that go for prices in four places of digits.
And the current...

Skysight by
Tom Kelley #711
By winning day 1 at the Sailplane Grand Prix my daily prize was a free month of SkySight.
I sent a email asking about my free months subscription and 5 minutes later Mathew Scutter of SkySight responded. I now have my free months subscription.
Still waiting on the refund from XC Skies. What's...

302 security failures by
T8
Anyone else got one, lately?
And yes, I do have the flash memory upgrade. Have flown the ship
about a hundred hours since the upgrade, this is the first such
problem (yesterday). Didn't think to check to see if the memory just
'rolled over', but it is probably close, IIRC 302 holds right around...

US Rules for 2011 by
John Cochrane[_2_]
I wrote a "contest corner" for April Soaring Magazine explaining some
of the contest rules changes for 2011. You can see it now on my
webpage,
http://faculty.chicagobooth.edu/john.cochrane/research/Papers/rules_11.html
I hope this clarifies some of the things that we're trying to do this
year,...

ClearNav vs. LX 9000 by
Mitch Polinsky
I searched for a comparison on the rec.aviation.soaring site for a
comparison between ClearNav and an LX 9000, but didn't find anything
directly comparing the two (I apologize if I somehow missed it). I'm
finalizing plans for a panel for a new glider and would be grateful
for any advice from users...

Oct 24 is our Dec 17 by
John H. Campbell
Happy birthday, soaring. The "first" soaring flight was the 9 minutes and
45 seconds of hovering over Kitty Hawk dunes by Orville Wright, in the
Wright "No. 5" glider on October 24, 1911. This was no milestone on the way
to powered flight, "started" on December 17, 1903 (by Orville also,...

Slow Down, Speed up by
Robert Gaines[_2_]
Several years ago, I was told that the US signals for slow down and speed
up are not the same as used in Europe.
Can any European friends confirm or deny this?
In USA, Slow Down is yaw
Speed Up is Rock wings
Thanks,
Bob

DG quality? by

I know this is somewhat subjective. Factory support agreements, etc. aside, has anyone noticed any difference in the quality of newer DG production models compared to SH and Schleicher? Thanks

SSA 2018 Rules Finish Penalty by
[email protected]
Folks,
Please share your opinions with the rules committee before January 10. Here is my feedback:
Hank,
Happy New Year.
The 2018 rules changes look good with the exception of the finish penalty which is only a minor improvement over the previous -200ft land-out scenario from a competition...

Predicting ground effects on induced power by
Marc Shorten
I'm trying to develop a simple model for estimating induced power
savings for birds based on Wieselberger's (1922) work on ground effect
in fixed wings.
As I only want a basic picture of what's happening as the wing
approaches the ground, I only want an equation for a curve that'll
roughly predict...

GPS Date Bug with Samsung Devices by
Alex[_5_]
I made a flight on Saturday, Jan 28 in Calif. using a Samsung Galaxy
phone with XCSoar 6.2.5.
The file would not process on the OLC. After examining the IGC file,
it was recording the date in the file one day ahead of the actual
date, i.e. it was recording Jan. 29 (and Jan 30 after 0000 UTC)....

Coal Mining and Ridge Soaring by
scurry
I was doing some ridge soaring west of Boulder, CO on Saturday, and it
got me thinking about the "real" ridge soaring in the eastern U.S. I've
read articles recently, and heard a story on npr about "mountain-top
removal" coal mining in West Virginia. For those of you unfamiliar, the
overburden is...
