S-3 vs F-4s...splash two by
Juvat
Yesterday I was flying with a former S-3 "Hoover" guy...he told a "sea
story" where a pair of Allied F-4s and an S-3 were hassling over the
Med. He thought they were Greek.
Anyway...the story basically has the S-3 heading toward the water in a
steep dive (evasive maneuver) with both F-4s in...

Maximum aircraft weight a carrier catapult can launch? by
J[_2_]
This ignorant civilian would like to know if there is a maximum
aircraft weight that an aircraft carrier's catapult can launch?
Background:
I am currently reading "On Yankee Station" by Nichols and Tillman
(1987). In the last full paragraph on page 102, the authors write:
"...Then the...

Why is USS George Washington still in port at Yokosuka?! by
J[_2_]
This ignorant civilian would like to know why the George Washington is
still in port in Yokosuka given the crisis in Japan. Given that they
had to rush the Ronald Reagan to Japan when the George Washington was
there, why didn't they put the latter out to sea to help out or at
least get it away from...

Jettisonable helicopter cockpit doors? by
J[_2_]
Hi. An ignorant civilian here with a question. I've never been in or
near a helicopter.
The May 2010 USNI Proceedings (pg. 78) mentions that "he Navy's
H-72A's have several specific equipment additions, including
jettisonable cockpit doors...." I can understand jet fighters have
jettisonable...

F-4 RADAR display by
KaBoom
What did the actual display look like on the F-4 RADAR scope? Not how
the scope was arranged in the pit but the actual target in the scope.
Was it like a sine wave display with a spike or what?

Planes are EVIL, the DEVIL created them in HELL ! ! ! by
Karl-Hugo Weesberg
Planes are EVIL, they are the work of the devil, made to collect your
souls and to turn you into brainless slaves of hell.
If you fly Planes, you will lose your soul to be damned
for eternal torment in hell.Demons and devils will feast on your soul
for all eternity.
So stop flying them now to...

Was The Grumman "Bearcat" Flown Off Carriers? by
Kates Saloon and Knife Emporium
Was the Grumman "Bearcat" ever flown off of aircraft carriers? Was it even
flown by the Navy? I am trying to settle a dispute between my husband and my
brother.
Thanks! - Kate

When were wings unfolded on carriers? by
[email protected]
I realize this is probably a large and complicated subject and varied
between aircraft and carriers, but just as a gross oversimplification
when would naval carrier aircraft typically fold up their wings and
unfold them?
Obviously, they would have to be unfolded before takeoff :) But
would it be...

B-17s in Pacific during WW2 hypothetical by
[email protected]
I'm aware that B-17s attacked Japanese Shipping during WW2
(battle of Midway comes to mind), but that they were way too
high and didn't hit anything.
Speaking hypothetically, would it have radically improved anthing
if the B-17 attacked from a much lower altitude?
I'm thinking that the B-17 was...
