Puchaz spin - now wearing 'chutes by
Bill Daniels
The discussion of wearing parachutes is an interesting one. Parachutes are
cheap insurance and, when one is needed, nothing else will quite do the job.
So, why aren't they universally worn?
In a word, weight. The available two seaters, for the most part, have
weight limitations that almost...

2005 Junior Worlds Accident by
Justin Craig
Having just read the posting by Alistair Wright I was
some what alarmed by his narrow minded attitude in
respect to a club that he does not appear to have flown
at for thirty years. Highlighting a one off incident
which involved a small number of people, and using
this as a stick to beat the whole...

What gliders do you hate? by
[email protected]
In the spirit of fun, what gliders (makes or specific ones) do you hate, distrust, or are just plain tired of. Have you given so many rides in one model that you never want to see it again? Is there a plane that, despite treating it right, just seemed to want to hurt you? Or is there one out there...

FES underpowered for 18m ship? by
Mana
I just had a chat with a fellow pilot whose friend sold his LAK 17b FES because he was disappointed by the ability of the FES to gain altitude. The problem being that when applying sufficient power to gain altitude, the battery would get warm to the point where the controller shuts the motor down....

Flaps and V-Tails of Death by
Wallace Berry
Hi all,
I'm here to report that I cheated death and survived a flight in a
glider with the dreaded "Landing Flaps and V-Tails of Death". Jim Harper
graciously allowed me to fly his beautiful HP-16. What's an HP-16 you
say? Well, looks to be just like the HP-18 (or I should say the HP-18 is
just...

Final glide by
s6
I can use my Oudie or my Clearnav vario for final glide.
Lately my CNv final glide is 400 feet lower than my Oudie.
The Oudie is right. All the setting are the same.
I cant correct the CNv.
Any idea from other CNv user?

SSA 2018 Rules Finish Penalty by
[email protected]
Folks,
Please share your opinions with the rules committee before January 10. Here is my feedback:
Hank,
Happy New Year.
The 2018 rules changes look good with the exception of the finish penalty which is only a minor improvement over the previous -200ft land-out scenario from a competition...

WGC Uvalde: US Team... What Happened???? by
[email protected]
To everyone with an interest:
Given the sub-par, and I am being generous here, performance of the US Soaring Team at the recently completed WGC. Is anyone else wondering what in the world happened?
Maybe the lack of debate and substantive change around this topic is why we did so badly in the...

physics question about pull ups by
John Rivers
I was trying to work out the expected height gain from a pull up
Experienced glider pilots say you will get a better pull up with a
heavier glider / water etc.
But I can't see this from my (probably incomplete) equations:
total energy = potential energy + kinetic energy
total energy before pull...

the light bulb could have been changed differently.
