final glide estimates by
bagmaker
Newbie help required!
Lets suppose I am on a shallow final glide, 60k out in my 40:1 ship, cruising at 60 knots. Recent thermals have been at least 5 knots and I am coming into some big lift. For the discussion rough air Vne is 100 knots.
What strength thermal should I take to increase finishing...

FLARM by
Robert Hart
Hi
This summer season in Australia has seen our first use of FLARM

Origami as a PDA by
[email protected]
Sometimes I find myself wishing my PDA was a tad bit bigger. With
Microsoft's 'Origami' being unveiled recently it presents a possibility
to fill that need. Obviously size and battery power is a factor in many
gliders but it would fit in my rather roomy cockpit. Question for the
computer types out...

Aft fuselage statics by
[email protected]
I am faced with leaking aft fuselage statics. Repairing them is going
to be a problem as I am not 18inches tall, which is the max heights for
getting back into the fuselage.
I recall reading an illustrated article several years ago about
installing aft fuselage statics in a glider that had none....

best bet under 10K by
[email protected]
I've been looking around the for-sale ads for sailplanes, and it seems
to me if I am willing to spend between ten and twenty thousand bucks,
there is a lot to choose from. There are plenty of older fiberglass
sailplanes in that range, and some decently-performing metal ships like
the 1-35. But...

Thrust Needed For Self Launching... by
tinman2006
Does anyone know (not a guess) how much thrust in pounds from a jet engine
would be needed to self launch a 1000 lb sailplane to 2500 AGL?
Or perhaps know a link whereby I can find the information or formula
needed so I can determine the answer myself.
I've looked ..googled..etc...can't find a...

Wooden Sailplane durability in humid climates by
[email protected]
Like many others, I am on the hunt for my first sailplane. One cannot
help but notice the performance value of the classic wood and
wood/fabric sailplanes such as the Ka-6, and SHK-1 Austria series among
others. Living in Florida where the humidity often rivals the high
temperatures during much...

Interesting Planning Tool by
jcarlyle
Ran across an interesting web site today, then did a Google search of
RAS and found it hasn't been mentioned here yet:
http://www.runwayfinder.com/
It's interesting to me as a US pilot because the current METARs and
TFRs are available by right clicking on a colored airport marking. Once
the new...

Seniors Contest Begins in Florida by
Charles Petersen
Yesterday was the practice day for the annual Seniors Contest at Seminole
Lake (www.soarfl.com) in Florida. A large entry of about 55 has been
whittled down from the 70 applicants, and the filed is crowded with hot
ships. We are all agog at Dick Butler's 'Beast' with its 28 metre wings and
sundry...

ASW20A and Cirrus by
Jeff Runciman
Hi guys,
After spending some time in Phoenix on a Grob 103,
I have started looking for my first glass glider. I
am currently looking at an ASW20A and a Standard Cirrus.
I know they are quite different. I guess my concerns
are the full flying tail on the Cirrus and the flaps
on the ASW. Any...
