ipaq repair by
Tuno
I have a b0rken hx4705 that I'd like to get repaired if that's cheaper
than getting a replacement on ebay. The display is cracked and non-
functional (a casualty of my Mother's Day bounce), but it works on
activesync.
Does anyone have any recent experience with a repair house? I've
google'd a few...

As usual I have some technical notes to help you...

(USA) SATR additions to airspace files by
Tuno
It seems NACO only puts SATRs in the National Flight Database "on
request". Currently only 3 of 10 are included -- Grand Canyon, New
York City and Washington DC.
If you fly near a Part 93 Special Air Traffic Rules area that is on
your sectional but not in your digital airspace file(s), please let...

(USA, Arizona) Luke SATR now contained in FAA NFD by
Tuno
As promised, the Luke SATR has appeared in the 201006 edition of the
National Flight Database.
Important note: justsoar.com morphs the NFD entry from Restricted type
Unspecified/Other to Controlled, Class D. So, to get the SATR in your
airspace file(s), you must include the "Class D" in your...

(USA) logbook endorsement requirement(s) for new glider type? by
Tuno
For as long as I've been flying anything, including and especially
gliders, I've had a CFI endorse a cockpit checkout in my logbook, for
any new aircraft type I flew.
Can someone tell me what/who requires this? Is it strictly insurance
companies, or is there a relevant FAR paragraph?
The reason...

(USA) Issues with latest (0913) FAA NFD airspace edition by
Tuno
The 0912 cycle was pretty quiet because the FAA was too busy mucking
up the 0913 edition. A couple of issues users should be aware of:
(1) The "Restrictive Airspace Name" field in the subject release is
missing the first character for most (if not all) airspace records.
Those those of you in...

(USA) New Mexico restricted airspace question by
Tuno
I recently learned that the restricted airspace in the SE corner of
Arizona (R-2303) is not in effect during the weekends. Does anyone
happen to know if any of the restricted areas over central New Mexico
(R-5107 -- over the White Sands Missile Range) have a similar policy?

A question for you GIS gurus out there by

I am trying to parse ESRI shapefiles that describe FAA TFRs. But they
are in NAD83 projections, with accompanying .prj files that look like
this:

(USA) airspace descriptions of state boundaries now available by

Files are available for individual states, or the entire country:
http://www.justsoar.com/public/
http://www.justsoar.com/public/sua/USA.sua
http://www.justsoar.com/public/openair/USA.txt
They are not of much use for most pilots except for adding to the
SeeYou display, but a few like to have...

Airports databases in LX instruments by
Tuno
I've been browsing the available documentation and LX's web site, but
I'm unable to figure out how the .LXA airport database files (such as
are used by my LX7007) are created.
I've learned how to use the LXasBrowser tool to create LX airspace
files (CU binary format) -- it's a great tool because I...

HP310 and hx4705 - side by side, first impression by
Tuno
Today I finally got to do a proper side-by-side comparison of an HP310
PNA and hx4705 PDA, each running SeeYou Mobile, under a bright sun and
in the glider cockpit.
In terms of screen performance under the Arizona sun, I could hardly
tell the difference between the two. If the HP310 was easier to...

Legal eagles - what's your take on this airspace issue? by

I'm rather surprised my original post on this topic didn't generate
any discussion, so I'm going to try again with what I learned since my
last. (Thank you CH!)
The first two press reports on the incident, where a powered
pagaglider pilot was arrested by Hualapai tribal police even though he
never...

The special flight restrictions and procedures around Washington D.C.
put into place after 9/11/2001 were made permanent last month

in the FAA's National Flight Database.
If anyone has reliable OpenAir or TNP descriptions of...

Looking for a few short HD soaring videos to download by
Tuno
I need a few HD soaring videos, and I don't mean to watch streamed on
youtube or fleabiz; I need to download them (mpeg or wmv or mp4) to
replay on a computer away from the 'Net.
They need to be minimum HD720 but1080p would most appreciated.
They do not need to be long -- 30 seconds to a minute...
