Runway Observer for Glider Operations by
rjciii
It is highly likely, upon the completion of an upcoming formal safety
inspection, that the local FAA will concur with the LGC Airport
Authority's rule that the glider club must post an observer to
visually clear the crossing runway as a requirement to operate gliders
at this otherwise uncontrolled...

CAI-302 and XCSoar by
Dan Marotta
I've noticed that XCSoar provides an Info Box for outside air temperature
but it is never displayed on my Android. Can someone tell me if OAT is
included in the data stream from the 302. It's really a pain to make 10
button pushes and 5 knob clicks just to get the temperature out of the...

Glider location near the beach? by
SF
Is there any place in the US where there is good glider cross country
potential near a beach? Trying to come up with a vacation spot that
meets the criteria of both of the people on the vacation.

Microbursts by
[email protected]
Remarkably valuable material is available these days on wikipedia.
But I've got problems with this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microburst
text.
Sailplaners will have a good understanding of natural air flow.
This text seems to suggest that you can take an unenclosed 'parcel'
of air, and...

Hi All
I have a ASW-27a and have been told that having the mod to the M&H

McCready Speed ring for ASW-20 by
Jeff Dorwart
Hello, Anyone still flying with a speed ring on their
-20. I am planning to buy a blank from Tim and would
like a transfer/photo from one of the factory ones
so I can make the engraving look somewhat professional. Like everyone else I have it on the PDA but would
prefer to duplicate it...

Water Landings by
rlovinggood
In the July, 2008 edition of "Gliding International", edited by John
Roake, there's this word on water landings:
"Walter Schneider and Wolf Lemke of LS fame carried out water landing
test and ditched an LS1 prior to the World Championships in Finland.
They were worried about the lack of land out...

BJ-4 Information? by
ContestID67[_2_]
Someone at the gliderport brought in a 1969 version of "Joy of
Soaring". It was fascinating to flip through the pages. Many things
are the same then as now.
There were several pictures of gliders; Diamant, Standard Libelle,
1-26, 2-33, Sisu, Skylark 4, Dart, Kestrel - all of which I have heard
of...

WRECK AT IDYLLWILD by
Vorsanger1
The narrative of an accident at Idyllwild, CA was posted in r.a.s. yesterday
Monday. It told of a pilot who lost both wings in trees, but walked away
practically unhurt. The narrative also gave an e-mail address of where the
wreckage is stashed, as well as a page to submit bids on any salvageable...

Bent up wings on Schempp-Hirth and Jonkers glider by
Jonathan St. Cloud
Can an aerodynamicists explain the reasoning behind the bent up wing tips of the Schempp-Hirth and Jonkers gliders. I thought Schempp first started this on the Nimbus4 purely to keep the outboard tips from getting scraped, but now the tips are bent on shorter wing birds. Someone fairly...

Which Transponder? by
Danl Johnson
A year ago there was a question about which transponder might be
preferable in gliders. Most of the responses debated *whether* a
transponder was a good idea, and no one had any comparative
experience.
I'm wondering, with another year under our collective belts, what
users' experiences with the...

Cross Country Miles by
Bill[_22_]
When I prepared my résumé for the FAA "Master Pilot" award, I added up my cross country miles in sailplanes. I have logged 65,107 cross country miles in the fifty years that I have been soaring. I wonder how other cross country enthusiasts are doing. I know that some pilots in California routinely...
