well, in a 737-500 checklist (for the dreamfleet cockpit) the yaw damper is
switched on in quite an early stage.

something like that:
(battery column from top to bottom) battery, some checks, ground power, bus
transfer, ...
(left column from top to bottom) ..., spoilers, ..., yaw damper, ....

I wrote it by memory so it might not be absolutely correct, but it should go
in a quite similar order. The YD isn't turned off until shutdown (don't know
about non-normal checklists).

and it works well to stablize the yaw in a crosswind, but I haven't figured
