Tom,
I'm surprised that you don't remember Bob's HP-18 flight. You were there. http://www.soaridaho.com/Schreder/HP..._BLUE_FLY.html Wayne "Evan Ludeman" wrote in message ... I would assume that Tom meant the first not-from-a-kit homebuilt to fly 1000km

Christopher,
I think Tom simply forgot. I'm sure Tom would agree that any glider that is classified on its' Airworthiness Certificate as Homebuilt by the FAA is eligible to compete for homebuilt firsts/records. Remember that building the homebuilt glider kits of yesteryear required more skill and investment of time than today's metal kits with their stack of parts that are formed by computer driven lathes/drill presses/milling machines and pre-drilled wing skins. Now look at today's potential composite kits and what Bob Kuykendall and Brad Hill have accomplished. http://www.hpaircraft.com/hp-24/ Do you really think that gliders built using Bob's molds subsequent to Brad's shouldn't be considered homebuilt? BTW, Dick Schreder was not an Aeronautical Engineer. He was a Civil Engineer. http://www.soaridaho.com/Schreder/Sc...Biography.html Wayne wrote in message news:16506855.506.1335652012216.JavaMail.geo-discussion-forums@pbcrs1... I didn't mean to take anything away from Marian's accomplishment, but
Bob's was absolutely epic. US diplome #15 and way before GPS and google earth. The game has changed a lot. Bob did it the hard way and deserves to be remembered for it. I still recall the bumper sticker on his van: "Old age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!" -Evan Ludeman / T8 |

It is a composite glider. Marian then flew 1000 km in it! I am not sure if anything else can be more epic! AK |
