In September 1901, an unknown Dayton bicycle maker told a prestigious gathering of engineers in Chicago that the biggest obstacle to human flight was the inability to control a machine in the air. "When this one feature has been worked out, the age of flying machines will have arrived," Wilbur Wright told the Western Society of Engineers. "For all the other difficulties are of minor importance." One year later, he fulfilled his prophecy on the windblown sand dunes of the Outer Banks, where he and his brother Orville flew the machine that opened the door to flight.
