Hello all,
I plan to fly in my first contest this summer. What is the best (easiest) way to transfer my IGC flight log to the scorer? I use a Cambridge 302 and IPAQ 3955. For the OLC, I download the file to my IPAQ using ConnectMe and the take the IPAQ home and connect it to my PC and then upload to the OLC. Would contest scoring be something similar to this? Thanks. Tom N. Stick an SD card in the iPAQ, copy the IGC file there, and hand the card to the scorer. To reduce confusion, make sure the IGC to be scored is the only file on the card, or at least the only obvious IGC file in the top level directory. Make sure you bring along a USB SD card reader (the one I have in my soaring kit is barely larger than the SD card and cost me all of $8US), in the unlikely event the scorer does not have one... I agree with the SD (or CF) card approach. Cambridge makes a small
piece of software for the iPAQ that makes copying the flight log to the card very simple. Then hand the card to the scorer. Make sure to write your name, tail number, contest number on the card. Also make sure that you configure the Cambridge (with the same piece of software) with your name, glider info, etc. The software also confirms the validity of the FAI log file after the download. I wouldn't worry to much about having the day's log file being the only one on the card. The naming convention for the log file contains the date and the recorder manufacturer and serial number. Finally, Glide Navigator II (for one) seamless handles the task of copying the log file from the 302 to the card. When you quit GNII after landing, it automatically asks you if you want to copy the file. Cool! Thanks to Chip. Enjoy, John |

Tom,
SD cards are the way to go with a PDA. Good idea to have a couple of them (they don't have to be big - 64 or 32mb work fine if you can find them!) and put your contest ID and name on them (of course, your logger file in it also has that info). You may have to leave it with the scorer if he's swamped, and that makes it easier to get it back later or the next morning. That's the only problem I see with the new EW logger - you either leave the whole logger in the box with the rest of the SD cards and floppies, or you drag along you notebook and download it and transfer to another format. Ideally, a logger should transfer it's files directly to a USB thumbdrive or SD card (directly or via reader connected via USB port). Lot cheaper to misplace than a logger! Doesn't the latest Colibri do that? Kirk |

Tom,
What everyone already said, and: 1) Congrats on flying your first contest this summer. You're going to love it! 2) When you use ConnectMe, be sure to specify a download location on the SD card; this saves you from having to copy it from the iPAQ's file storage to the SD. ConnectMe should remember the setting and it will be the default next time you download. btw I've flown in 3 regional contests, and at all three, the scorer had smart software that would automagically find the day's IGC file on the storage card. But if you really want to keep the scorer happy, don't be the last to turn yours in! ~ted V2C "2NO" |

Hi Kirk,
2 comments It is my belief that contest scorers will love the EW microRecorder because you just plug it into the USB port on any PC and it looks like a memory card reader or hard drive. Very simple. No software required. EW is working on a slightly more expensive version of the microRecorder that will include an SD card slot. To be honest, I don't think it is necessary or worth the extra money. Hi Paul,
No doubt, the new EW logger looks like a great bit of kit, and will be convenient for most of the poeple most of the time. Just depends on how you use and download a logger. I have been at contests where the scorer was real busy, so we just dropped off the SD card. With an EW, you would have to wait around a little longer. In 99% of the times, probably not an issue. I just wish you could leave it installed in the glider and download into a PDA/SD card. One less thing to take out and replace - not always easy to do in some gliders, especially if it's buried and the antenna connector is hard to get to. But that is entirely due to how my glider is setup and obviously does not mean the EW Micro logger isn't the perfect device for someone else. In particular, it seems like a perfect club logger. It's nice to have a choice of options - I think all loggers should allow the option of downloading to a PDA, transferring via USB, or transferring TO a USB thumb drive or SD via reader. And only cost $99.95, of course! Cheers, Kirk |

Contests that I have competed in, over the last 5 years the scorer
wants nothing to do with a flight recorder, they would not accept them. They required SD Card, USB sticks. disk etc. I sell a nice Colibri with a mini SD Card.
