After weeks and weeks of unrelenting bad weather, light winds and warm
temperatures have once again embraced the heartland. Unicom -- eerily silent for so long -- is wall-to-wall with students and $100 hamburger flights. Dang, but it's good to hear again! Now, if only it holds till tomorrow...when Mary and I can go enjoy it! -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

The same happened at our airport. We finally had some good flying
weather. There were at least 5 other pilots at the tie-down area yesterday (the most that we had ever seen in months). We got to tryout the new cowl insulated cover and wings/stabilator covers made by Alaskan Tent & Tarp. I was about to give up on them and ordered from Kennon when they finally called. The order was completed quickly and promptly shipped to us but we were away during the holidays then we had several days of snow and freezing rain. The last chunk of ice finally melted off our plane yesterday. The covers fit well but we were not happy with the metal S-hooks. Noway that we are going to use them on our fresh paint. We are still searching for plastic snap hooks or strong canopy bungee balls. Rick got an hour of instrument practice. After almost 2 months of no instrument flying practices, his scanning needed work but he nailed the VOR A approach at 20N in spite of the wavering VOR needle (the VOR station was probably close to 40nm). I only had enough time to do 3 landings. They were not greasers but pretty smooth. We have been up only 3 times since getting our plane back in early November!' Hai Longworth |

Now, if only it holds till tomorrow...when Mary and I can go enjoy it! -- Jay Honeck The $100 dollar breakfast flight on Saturday had me shoe horned into the pattern in front of a flight of 5 RV's and a Piranah all on downwind at the same time with more aircraft on base and final. Our own little version of Oshkosh By Gosh. I was pedaling the poor140 down final like a three year old on a tricycle chasing an ice cream truck. Lot's of effort but not much in the way of results. The P51 Reno racer "Miss America" was in the pattern a bit later and graced the ramp with her presence. The high temp for the day reached 86 degrees. Sunday I flew to OKC to play air taxi and bring the wife home from spending a few days with our college girls. The return "night flight" home was awe inspiring, with unheralded visibility and nairy a ripple in the air. Really, really enjoyable. After two or three weeks of 70 & 80 degree weather, this evening we're having snow flurries. It was nice while it lasted! We have been up
only 3 times since getting our plane back in early November!' Whew -- and I thought *we* had been held on the ground. We flew a bunch in November, some in early December, when it was cold and clear, and very little since then. We did get up Sunday for an hour, and it felt GREAT. Heck we were only wearing light sweaters, and we didn't even turn the heater on -- in January!? This after the coldest early December in recorded history... -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |
