Default Tailwheel endorsement:authorized instructor

Q & A:
Question of the Week
EAA Government Relations
Can a sport pilot instructor endorse a Private Pilot for the
61.31 tail wheel endorsement?

Answer:
In a word, yes.

Since FAR 61.31(i) states only that the tail wheel
instruction must be given by an authorized instructor, the
FAA takes the position that "a tail wheel endorsement is a
tail wheel endorsement." If a SubPart K instructor [NOTE:
SubPart J does not apply to instructors, only to sport
pilots] gives an endorsement to a commercial pilot in a
Maxair Drifter (LSA), the endorsement is valid for any tail
wheel aircraft.

A pilot receiving a tail wheel endorsement as a student
pilot or sport pilot, or from a SubPart K instructor, need
not augment that endorsement in any manner upon earning a
higher-grade pilot certificate.

An endorsement earned in a J-3 does not apply to a DC-3, of
course, because the DC-3 requires a type rating.
