Now that the portable FLARM is out, those of you who have mounted it,
would you mind informing - photos would be great too - how you did it. Looking for a good solution before I mess things up too much. Tom Idaho |

Tom Idaho Tom, Mark Mocho has made some very nice portable PF mounts for pilots at Moriarty. His contact info is on his website at: http://mmfabrication.com/ Thanks - Renny |

On the Schleicher ASH-26E, there isn't enough room above the
glareshield to allow clearance for the PowerFlarm antenna - - it's not supposed to contact the canopy. This, and to avoid it blocking the view or panel, required making a shelf bracket to extend aft from the glareshield lip and also to allow the PF to mount a bit lower. This has the added advantage of bringing the control knob a bit closer to the pilot for easy access. I made the bracket from aluminum with a curved portion to mate with the underside of the glareshield, TIG welded to the bracket shelf. The curved underside mount could be made of wood and the shelf screwed to that if TIG welding isn't available. However, be sure that you match the baud rates. The FLARM defaults to 19200 baud and the SN10 defaults to 4800 baud. If you have somewhat recent software in your SN10 you can set the baud rate to 19200. Best Regards, -- Paul Remde Cumulus Soaring, Inc. |

T8 The bracket (and PowerFlarm) "goes away" with the canopy in the 26E, so there is a break-away plug under the glareshield so the canopy eject process won't be impeded should I decide not to try landing the remaining glider bits. The bracket is .050" aluminum, and even if used on a glider such as the DG-800 series, where the pedestal stays put, would easily bend out of the way. Is could, if need be, be mounted with frangible nylon screws or 3-M mushroom style interlocking tape. bumper |

This is exactly my concern. When you blow the canopy, I'm told it often comes straight back, in which case you could (perhaps) catch the flarm and the bracket in the head. As well, thin bits of aluminum in the cockpit have inflicted some nasty injuries in crash landings. I'd be disinclined to put something like this in my cockpit. T8 |

Just made a canopy mount on the right rail, much as we did with cameras years ago. I raised it straight up about 6", then 90 degree bend inwards. I angled it in and down a bit. It is now about 14" from my head and I can instantly interpret the info. FLARM is a situational awareness aid and I want to spend zero time trying to interpret the warning and emmediately look in the threat area. Don't know how to post a photo to the group. See you at Parowan? JJ |

I've seen the results of a pilot's face striking an object in the cockpit
during a crash. It wasn't pretty. I'd suggest that it be mounted more than 14" from your face or that you keep your belts tight enough at all times to avoid an unwanted collision.
