Default Engine Out on Take-Off Caught On Tape

Well, MP3 to be specific in the archives section of liveatc.net.
http://www.liveatc.net/archive.php. go to KFRG on Nov 15 and choose the
1200-1230 file.

A Mooney 84U is cleared to take-off at about 2 min 20 sec into the file. At
3 min 45 sec he says he has a problem with the engine and is "going down."
The tower controller (it was Rene for those familiar) does a great job of
clearing the traffic without even the slightest hesitation. It was like he's
done this a hundred times. Definitely an interesting listen.

Regards,

Marco Leon

Thanks, that was very interesting. We could use some friendly ATC
folks like that in the Philly area.

I didn't have a chance to go back an listen again, but wasn't there a
conversation between the Mooney and ATC about getting himself moving
or get off of the runway? Could be wrong, but it sounds like maybe he
knew all was not well before he took off.

Yes there was. I thought the same thing. The other interesting tidbit was
when he asked to taxi back, he didn't seem familiar with the FBO name but
was familiar with the repair shop. This leads me to believe that he was not
based at FRG and there for repairs.
