On a modern car, you'll also wipe out the O2 sensor very quickly. Back in the early 90s, I owned a Merc convertible with a high compression 429ci V-8 that had to have at least 99 octane mogas to avoid knocking. At the same time, I owned a '59 172 with an O-300 that absolutely hated being run on avgas. Lots of lead fouling and gummed up valves. My solution turned out to be quite easy. I ran the 172 on 87 octane unleaded car gas and the Merc ran 100LL avgas. Both were quite happy with the change. As for prices, yesterday I came up dead even. $2.12/gal for both avgas and mid-grade car gas. John Galban=====N4BQ (PA28-180) |
