If you've ever seen one of those Discovery Channel shows where they
follow an NTSB investigation (like say TWA 800), you'll see just how
believable all this is. One show I saw, they basically started with
models of sections of the plane built with chicken wire, on which they
hung the fragments they found. It was like building an airliner jigsaw
puzzle.

What's amazing is that we understand engineering well enough that we
can build 500,000 pound aircraft lightly enough to fly big payloads at
high speeds and yet sustain all the loads of actual flight.
