Lottery money still burning a hole in my pockets......
I was wondering what I could expect to get hourly from a TV station for an R44 ENG news copter. A station here is looking into contracting a helicopter for 10-15 hrs a month and I thought "Mmmm, maybe a way to get someone else to pay for my helicopter." Just a thought, I'm sure I'll get over it. Joe |

![]() Around here, people get about $400/hr for an R44 and $600-$700/hr for a jet ranger. Dennis. "joe" wrote: Lottery money still burning a hole in my pockets...... ![]() helicopter for 10-15 hrs a month and I thought "Mmmm, maybe a way to get someone else to pay for my helicopter." Work the figures carefully. By the time you cover insurance, added maintainence with the added hours, additional requirements for commercial work (ie. many news stations require huge liability coverage) and other niceity's -- can almost guarantee the 'break-even' is about 500 hrs per year at the usual rates, after that the profits can mount rapidly. Good, good, talk me out of it. ;-)
If it was a good idea, someone else would be doing it. Still......... As someone who's worked in the news biz for a couple decades, it's been my
experience that unless the station is flying at least 25- 30hrs a month, you'll be hard pressed to make much money at it, even with an R44. Fly Safe Dave |
