Not something you want to try at home, but he very successfully lowered
items into jungle clearings in Ecuador that weren't accessable any
other way except for a 2 week walk. Even ran a wire down the rope and
put a phone in the basket to talk to those on the ground.

I read somewhere way back when that postal guys used to deliver mail to
farmers via bucket and rope method from a piper cub. I think it was
Ripley's. Honest to God I did read it.
