Does anybody know when or even if the Loran system is going to be
terminated? I once understood it to be sometime in 2006 but that was before 9-11. I have had discussions since then with aviation officials who noted that the Loran system is not as easily messed with since its combination of low carrier frequency, considerable signal strength, and substantial ground anntenna make it so robust. The GPS system signals are apparently much more easily spoofed with portable equipment - which had been available from former Iron Curtain militaries. As a backup system it would seem that the need for Loran hasn't gone away. I too like my Flybuddy. |
