I've finally located the manuals at
http://www.pilotmall.com/page/1/PROD/26/17390 Mary and I own (and LOVE) the AvMap EKP-IIIC, the predecessor to the EKP-IV. We played with the IV extensively at OSH this year, and I fell in love with it. It's smaller, thinner -- yet still has a BIGGER, brighter color screen than the III -- and the controls are more intuitive. It can also be displayed either "portrait" or "landscape" -- a trick the III can't perform. Unfortunately, Lowrance was running a fantastic deal on their 2000C at the show (they gave me an absurd trade-in allowance for my old, partially functional Airmap 300), so we opted to buy the 2000C and put it on the right yoke for the co-pilot. The IV is a fantastic product, and I hope to obtain one, perhaps at OSH '06? -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

Basically I am looking for a very good VFR GPS. Especially now that Jepp have dropped their Flitemap product, so there *appears* to be no way to display charts containing elevation data on a moving map GPS. Depending on your budget, you might be interested in ChartCase running on the Motion LS800. It's the same screen, I think, as the AvMap IV and is pretty spectacular. I'm not sure about the size; I think the AvMap is thinner. ChartCase gives you a complete desktop flight planner plus all the NACO charts (hi, low, WAC, sectional) and plates for the US, all georeferenced. Even the airport diagrams are georeferenced. On top of that, V3.0 will give you synthesized flight instruments and georeferenced LandSat imagery. You can actually fly "contact" above the clouds, watching the lakes & forests go by underneath! And, yes, there is a TAWS screen and a WXWORX option. http://www.flightprep.com/rootpage.php?page=HomeEFB seattleavionics.com just introduced an apparently-similar product, but I am not familiar with it. I was/am a beta tester for ChartCase 3.0. No pay. No freebies. But it's fun. |

The only way I know of to get a GPS moving map with charts showing elevations is http://www.pocketfms.com has terrain and now allows for user scanned charts as well. Oh, and the charts are free, donations accepted... |

Some of the 800x600 ones are compact enough, but then (for European coverage) one has to run Windows based software, which usually looks poor in 800x600. Yes. I am waiting for a small form factor 1024x768 screen from Motion or someone. "LS1000" maybe. If you are thinking about this route, be sure to test fly the computer screen. I have an HP TC1100 and it is very difficult to read in the cockpit, though I think it is as good as other non "View Anywhere" screens. I think you will want the view-anywhere type design. (The AvMap IV screen is excellent BTW; a friend just bought one and I got to play with it a bit.) HTH. |
