They had to go to unusual measures because their petroleum industry couldn't produce useful quantities of high-test avgas. More recently, Bruce Bohannon used nitrous in a couple of aircraft he used for time to climb and altitude attempts - Pushy Galore and the (Exxon) Flying Tiger. Pushy's 0-200 was fairly happy on nitrous, but he had a couple of nasty engine failures on the 0-540 in the Tiger and switched to forced air induction. |
