The ones that suffer with this are the stewardesses who have to find
him a seat with an empty next to it and, if no empties, then the poor
person who has to sit next to him, who, paid for a whole seat but has
to share it with his overflow.

If they need two seats, they should pay for them.

but aren't the crew supposed to only place there people who are
sufficiently fit to open the door and/or help their fellow
passengers out?

everytime I have had been given one of these seat by checkin,
the crew always switched me to some place else (I use crutches,
but I am in a lot better shape than most passengers, and I
guarantee you that I won't be the last out in case of emergency);

the funny thing is indeed to see the same crew place there
morbidly obese or drunk passengers...

never understood the logic of it.

you forget the extraordinary power of denial; they
do not need two seats, they are just 'big boned',
or it is their genes, or something, you are an
insensitive bad person :-)

There is a tape measure, there is a scale. If you are bigger than so
big, you buy two seats, or you don't go. No if and or buts about it.
Put it in writing and get the govt to approve it, whatever is necesary.
Just like any other requirment. If you want to use the seat, you have
to pay the money.
