We had an Air Force F-86 making landing approaches on the
Bon Homme Richard in 1959 off the Philippines. Luckily he did not try to touch down on the carrier deck or we would have been picking up the pieces of his F-86 with its too-weak-for-carrier-landings struts! Famous Fury Flyer! They have a story about one of their test pilots, an ex-Navy man, doing some kind of B-24 test off the coast when he spots a carrier. He lowers the flaps and gear and turns downwind into the pattern.
