Columbia helicopters did something interesting with one of theirs http://www.colheli.com/colheli.html and click on the "news and events" item and scroll down to "hover barge photo" ------------------------------------------ NO, use John Mee3 at comcast dot net (remove the spaces and do the obvious with the "dot" and the "at" |

Thanks Paul and Jimmy (for the repost) I downloaded Jim's smaller size first, then went back for Paul's original pic. As well as resizing my repost, I've played around a little with the colour balance, to remove the orange discolouring that everything in the '70s had back then. Looks like someone in the triple deuce broke through the hard outer layer to find that soft creamy centre. I've done it with a Land Rover - but never had a Chinook to pull me out though. Otherwise, it's time to break out the spades .... -- Cheers Dave Kearton |

Otherwise, it's time to break out the spades .... Aviation Center put out a NOTAM back in 1970 (I think) prohibiting use of slings for towing, etc and only to be used for sling loading static cargo. I seem to remember this went out after a couple of CH47's pulled themselves into the ground with fatal results. I saw one of these situations outside of DaNang in 1967 or 68 when a Big Hook was trying to lift an M551 Sheridan and just about didn't make it. The pilot attempted a sort of "rolling" lift and evidently didn't know that the track's were locked. He dragged it a couple hundred feet before the load master pulled the pin and let the sling go. Made quite a crash when the M551 set back down from about 25 feet. Wish I had had a movie camera! Cheers, Dave |
