Does anyone have experience of using a Piper Cherokee 180 as glider tug and
how effective, or otherwise, it was? |

The towpilot (who was, admittedly, not way up there on the competence scale) had a terrible time handling it at towing speed, and if you held a Cherokee model in your hand and turned it this way and that, you'd find very few viewing aspects I didn't see at one time or another...;-) rj |

I own a PA28-180 and never in my wildest dreams have I considered towing with it. I see you are in UK so with lower density altitudes than I'm used to in SW USA it might be possible to use it to tow light single seaters. Certainly would not be my first choice for a tow plane and I wouldn't be the first one to hook up behind it. Andy |

They have a long take off run, but once airborne they climb more or less like a Super Cub. The gliding club of Eksiltuna (site of the WGC 2006) had one for many years. They put a silencer and a four bladed Hoffmann prop on it. Worked quite well. Robert ASW 28-18E "RD" CD WGC2006 |

Cherokee 180 - can't comment, but I have been up behind a Dakota (235HP
Cherokee) a few times, in a Duo Discus. Apart from the weird view of the top of the cabin it was a pleasant enough experience. We even out climbed the Glide Omarama Fatman once! The ground run felt long, but then I am not used to the Duo so can't compare. OK - the tug pilot was good too, so maybe he flattered it, but the Dakota was pretty stable. They regularly tow SGS 2-32s @max gross wt to 8k for rides over Monterey Bay. Not the same performance as our PA25-235 but easier to get tow pilots because of insurance problems! Haven |
