I assume that I'm not the only one who is concerned that devices like this
(Clearnav / UFS) will increase the tendency for pilots to keep their head
inside the cockpit.

You mean like unfolding and reading a paper map?

No, I mean by having a huge color moving map, and more, in front of your
face all of the time.

For me, having a huge color moving map on the panel would let me
interpret it more quickly than the small color moving map on a stalk
that I use now, so I'd spend less time looking at it. Using a PDA takes
me less time than using something like an LNAV or MNAV, and way less
time than using paper maps.

I have a ClearNav installed in my LS4. I can quickly glance at the
screen and get the information I need. No more squinting. The pilot
is the problem, not the hardware.

I suspect that you are right. I was just wondering.

Well, speaking for myself, I suspect that I'd spend about as much time
looking at the display as I spend looking at my IPAQ (less, since it's
easier to read); and I'd glance down at it about as often as I glance at the
GPS screen in my car. When compared to old-school pencil and paper, I
believe that tools like this make cross-country soaring more convenient,
safer, and dare I say, even more fun.

But that's just me.
