Sounds like you are dedicating a separate email address to this group?
What prevents someone from spamming the group by emailing to it under
different names from different email addresses? Or what prevents
emailing the group with non-aviation related stuff? I probably don't
understand the mechanics completely.

It's probably ME who doesn't understand all the ramifications :-)

It's just floating an idea really. So far we have 4 pilots in a simple
email loop each with a folder holding the addresses of the others.
Email can be answered or sent as desired. We don't have any filters in
use, just a few friends communicating with each other and talking
flying.
I have the same setup with my family emails.
Don't know about spamming. I'm sure it could be done, but I for one
don't get much spam as my ISP filters a lot of it out daily. In fact,
I can honestly say that spam for me anyway isn't an issue any longer.
Can't speak for the other guys but they seem happy with what we're
doing.
The main thing to remember here is that this is in no way anything
"formal".....just friends talking flying without the hassles we have
on the Usenet forums. All of us still remain here, but it's a welcome
option to have when someone wants to tell how their flight went that
day and doesn't necessarily want to be told to go to hell or what an
asshole they are in the process :-))

Ok, I'll give it a shot. I belong to a couple of internet
societies like that, they seem to work well.

I am familiar with setting up mail accounts. You can restrict the email
(therefore the ones that post) accounts you want on the mail list. They
work well.

Our international workgroup works quite well, although I'm beginning
to find some problems associated with forming a private email group
where public announcement is involved. :-)

Yeah, I think that may be a significant difference. Joining the
international work group you refer to, I suspect, is by invitation only,
whereas here anyone who reads this newsgroup can potentially gain access
to participants' email. They could then keep trashing the group by
changing their identity to avoid filters, as already happens here. Or
maybe, as I said before, I'm not understanding the mechanics.

I plan to join up after I figure out how I want to configure this, but
will be gone for 2 weeks first.

Try Yahoo Groups, the Yahoo groups I have been on in the past have always
been decent.
