Well rats, such a tremendous loss
![]() I once called Stan mainly just to tell him that another one the Cherokee's were back in the air. This was right after I bought 373Y. Now I'm very glad that I did so. I don't know if Stan has been in ailing health lately or not, but I am wondering if he was well enough to make it out to the ESA Workshop in Tehachapi last weekend? I hope so, as Dean Gradwell was supposed to be there with his absolutely pristine Cherokee II which won the best restoration award at IVSM 2009 in Elmira. I think Stan would've been very proud to see that beautiful bird. Not too many of us left out there flying Cherokee's, guess we'll just have to keep it up. Man what a nice job! And what a nice guy. Brought back a lot of memories of my old dentist and glider builder, the late Don Mythen. I think he built 3 of them. Seeing Dean's Cherokee got me sort of interested in the design. I haven't looked at one since I was a kid so I became intrigued with the design. Do you have a set of plans? Do you know anyone who is interested in me bororowing a set of plans so that I could scan them? I'd be happy to create a pdf of the plans if I had a good set to work with. Dan Rihn |

I helped rescue Tony Condons Cherokee from oblivion (along with Dave
Shuur at Lawrenceville who did most of the work) and got it into Tony's hands. I too called Stan on the phone a couple of times and he was amazingly sharp and very helpful. We were having some weight and balance issues and Stan went back to his original plans to dig up the datum and limits for us. I asked how he was getting along healthwise (a few years ago) and he said that he was installing a garage door at the moment so he must not be doing too bad for a 90 some year old guy! I really regret I never got to shake his hand. He was a legend and a hell of a nice guy. Perhaps Dean and Dick and marking thermals for him in the great beyond. Matt Michael |

Matt Michael Way back when I first started gliding I exchanged emails with Stan on a number of topic's I didnt know he was one of the US pioneer's of soaring then but always enjoyed emailing with him. What was funny was he would always sign off as "THE Stan Hall" Final glide Stan. Al |

Al Stan Hall became one of my first soaring heros/icons/'admirants' when I started getting "Soaring" mag late 1972, thanks to his (very many, over the years) columns/submissions/etc. Pretty soon I began keeping copies of all his "Homebuilder's Hall" columns, and have had more than a few occasions over the decades to refer to 'em. I *think* I bought a copy of his book/collections referred to in this thread's original post, just because I could and as a sign of respect for the man, but I know I can lay my hands on the self-generated collection more quickly...a measure of how honored a spot in my collection it still has. Stan Hall has been a good friend for over 35 years, he helped with
encouragement and advice on my first home-built sailplane. later, he crunched the numbers on my Bowlus Super Albatross (spar & wing fitting) calculations. Stan sent me 3 pages of math that I didn't understand with a final note; Your wing is strong enough, just strong enpugh! Stan has been there to help others his whole life. Thanks old friend, center up a good thermal, we are all headed your way. JJ |
