Thank you Gilles Hi Gilles- I assume you have the latest serial/usb converter drivers; you might also want to check: • Close all other applications that may be using the PC com port (Active Sync is a well known culprit.) • Check cable and connector • Disconnect all other units that may be connected to another COM port (LX 20, Colibri, PDA) • Check the com speed on both units which should be the same With newer laptops, I've had to decrease the com speed on the laptop end - they are much quicker than the nav computer, and the mis-match causes no communication. I have had different success on my laptop on different usb ports - some are powered, some aren't, and that makes a difference (no indication in the the laptop manual, and a long time with tech spt to find out). Could you communicate with the lx with an older laptop? Does someone else at the field have a vista laptop that works (or doesn't) - this will help troubleshooting. Latest version of software - if you're using LXe (or SeeYou, StrePla, etc) - that works with vista. Dan |

One problem that I have encountered is that the LX software on your pc cannot automatically detect which usb port the LX instrument is connected to so it often assigns the wrong port. In addition to the checks already given, on your computer, go to control panel, hardware and sound, device manager, ports, and check to see which usb port is assigned to the serial port simulator (mine says something like radio shack serial port simulator). Once you know which port, use go back to the LX software and be sure that the correct port is selected. good luck. Hi Because my exchange date is up on the serial/USb adapter I have return it. Still, it's very difficult to work with a laptop outdoors since they're almost impossible to read in the daylight. Also, Windows has a bad habit of thinking that you've attached a serial mouse to the system! I've had this whole setup fail with a netbook, though. The best device for day-to-day operation (declaring and downloading flights) is your PDA. Soarpilot works for the Palm users, and ConnectMe works for the iPaqs. This way you only need the laptop for when you want to update the turnpoints or airspace in the device. -- Matt |

Thank you Gilles Check the "COM port number" that is being assigned to your serial/usb adapter. (System/hardware/Com ports in your Windows control panel). or.. Switch to using any PDA with the proprietary serial sync-cable. ConnectMe is free software that will do almost anything you need, quicker and easier than any PC. Aldo |

Hi Gilles,
For years I thought there were no good, reliable USB to Serial adapters for soaring instruments. But customers clued me in to a few that work very well. Of course, they will only work if you read the manual and follow the installation instructions and determine the comm port used and set it in your soaring software. For ILEC SN10 units: Belkin F5U409 (no others seem to work for me) For everything else (Cambridge, LX, Volkslogger, etc., but NOT ILEC SN10): Keyspan USA-19HS Both are available from Amazon.com for about $30. I don't sell them. Best Regards, Paul Remde Cumulus Soaring, Inc. "Gaetan Trudel" wrote in message ... I found a cable that work at Radio Shack. But LXE or Window Vista keep forgetting which com is assigned and it keeps coming back to com 3 who does not work. I have FlywithCE has a logger. I need LXE to upgrade DB, turnpoints, AS...etc. regards Gilles Gilles |
