![]() I have a friend who is a cropduster by trade. Every other year they are shot at. It happens. While flying an Air Tractor AT-301 in Georgia, I had some guy shoot at me from his back porch while I was turning to head back into a field for a spray run. Interesting. -John *You are nothing until you have flown a Douglas, Lockheed, Grumman or North American* |

I did a pre-purchase on a 182 a few years back that had had a bullet hole on the horizontal stabilizer repaired. It'd lived most of its life in southern CA. I wonder how many other 'shot-up' planes there are out there? Reid-Hillview, in San Jose, CA has problems every New Years Eve, with the local Hispanic population liking to fire their guns into the air. The cops take cover under viaducts from about 11:45 till 12:15AM, as the place is like Baghdad on the opening night of Desert Storm. I used to know people who collected bottles full of spent bullets on the ramp. I also knew a few who had their planes holed from bullets dropping out of the sky -- including one that penetrated the hangar roof and then went on through the flap skins of a Cessna L-19. |

I was recently flying with a buddy of mine in East TX in his C140. I made a
comment on all of the deer blinds below us, and he said, only half joking "its about that time of year when you want to stay above about 2,000AGL". He said he landed once and had a bullet hole in his vertical stabilizer. Steve "Dan Luke" wrote in message ... Let me parse this for those not from TX.. Deer season. Drunken hunter(s) in blinds awaiting deer. Stupid airplane comes over and circles the deer lease (round and round). Deer stays away. Deer hunter(s) (at least here in TX) would probably take a shot Only way bird could get a hole in vertical stab would to be in a steep turn. Bottom line. Don't circle low over a deer lease here in Texas when hunt is going on Big John. On Sat, 1 Nov 2003 01:44:45 -0600, "News1" wrote: I was recently flying with a buddy of mine in East TX in his C140. I've been shot at and hit on several occasions and not in Texas. Perhaps its a good idea to stay away from there? Nah...I often flew into Cotulla where my boss had a ranch. I did crop dusting for over 30 years around the world and was shot at nearly everywhere. I'm not sure what it was that attracts the bullets! Some of the time it was during a civil war or insurrection, some of the time it was a nut case with organic farm, and even got rocks thrown at me in Egypt while spraying cotton. I was warned off by hunters while spraying cotton that coincided with squirrel or deer season in Louisiana, and have been warned off by hunters during pheasant season in Colorado and Nebraska. But, let me state EMPHATICALLY, I am a life member of the NRA and a hard core conservative as well as a solid pro gun advocate. I am an anti-stupidity radical and any time someone shoots at me, I will take all possible means to resolve the issue and eliminate the threat. Funny how the dump handle seems to malfunction when over areas that have stupid people in it.
