Subject: Garmin GPSmap 196 on 172 Yoke Date: 16 Feb 2004 10:16:15 -0800 I've used the Garmin yoke mount on the 172 several times. No big deal as far as the ease of mounting it. Of course with a yoke mount the GPS moves whenever the yoke moves, it's not directly in your field of view as it would be mounted on top of the panel, and you may not get as much yoke travel on the flare unless you remove it prior to landing. I'm trying to figure out how I'll mount it when I have a yoke clip attached when flying IFR in a plane without a panel mount GPS. Dave Most of the time I will use the GPSmap 196 for creating and monitoring user waypoints - it will function as backup only in case the panel mount system should fail. Coming week the 196 will be installed on the yoke with either the Garmin or the RAM mount. I will report on the outcome. Cheers - Otto |

Subject: Garmin GPSmap 196 on 172 Yoke Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2004 03:42:53 GMT I have a 196 yoke mount. Works great. Also have a 530. Use them both. The Garmin 196 is a great battery backup and the yoke is a fine place to mount it. Near the hands and the eyes.Properly installed, there is no restriction issues at all. Let me report on the outcome of my installation within one or two weeks. The 196 with both mounts, Garmin and RAM, has arrived yesterday. My panel GPSs are a 430 plus a CNX80. That may look like a real overkill, however I have to create and up-/download quite a number of user waypoints (also maps) at survey flights. The 430 and CNX80 unfortunately have no download capability - what a pity. Cheers - Otto |

................................. But I have a dream, and I'll tell you exactly what it would take to get me using the thing routinely as a backup: it would be some sort of articulated arm that mounts to the inside of my seat mechanism. Sort of like the adjustable neck on an iMac, so I could raise, lower, and swing the thing in and out of my field of view as required. I think police cars sometimes have their mobile display terminals mounted like that? Yeah, that would be pretty cool and it would probably cost hundreds. .............. Have you looked at RAM Mounts Catalog? The sell some versions of flex arms holding GPS, PDAs etc. in the cockpit. RAM is at www.ram-mount.com/. Otto |

I have installed the RAM mount with the Garmin GPSmap 196 at the yoke and have flown about 15 hours with it. The RAM kit offers much more flexibility than the original Garmin mount and I easily can position it to maintain best view of the panel behind. RAM is at www.ram-mount.com and offers a very detailed catalogue on its various mounts, which fit almost anything one could wish to work with in the cockpit - without putting it into the panel. I bought the RAM gear at MobileCX Inc. Savannah www.mobilecx.com , shipping to Europe was quick and without flaws. Thanks to David, Wyatt and Christopher for helping with comments on the topic.
