Garmin GPSmap 196 on 172 Yoke

I've used the Garmin yoke mount on the 172 several times. No big deal
as far as the ease of mounting it. Of course with a yoke mount the
GPS moves whenever the yoke moves, it's not directly in your field of
view as it would be mounted on top of the panel, and you may not get
as much yoke travel on the flare unless you remove it prior to
landing. I'm trying to figure out how I'll mount it when I have a
yoke clip attached when flying IFR in a plane without a panel mount
GPS.

Most of the time I will use the GPSmap 196 for creating and monitoring user
waypoints - it will function as backup only in case the panel mount system
should fail.
Coming week the 196 will be installed on the yoke with either the Garmin or the
RAM mount. I will report on the outcome.

I have a 196 yoke mount. Works great. Also have a 530. Use them both. The
Garmin 196 is a great battery backup and the yoke is a fine place to mount
it. Near the hands and the eyes.Properly installed, there is no restriction
issues at all.

Let me report on the outcome of my installation within one or two weeks. The 196 with
both mounts, Garmin and RAM, has arrived yesterday. My panel GPSs are a 430
plus a CNX80. That may look like a real overkill, however I have to create and
up-/download quite a number of user waypoints (also maps) at survey flights. The 430
and CNX80 unfortunately have no download capability - what a pity.

Have you looked at RAM Mounts Catalog? The sell some versions of flex arms
holding GPS, PDAs etc. in the cockpit. RAM is at www.ram-mount.com/.

mount and I easily can position it to maintain best view of the panel behind.
